Filtration & fluid control

Intelligent technologies are being seen across a variety of fluidic devices.

Not everything about manufacturing fluidic devices has changed. Nesterenko says “quality and reliability remain foundational”, but manufacturers now also need to validate the system’s “intelligent” parts. “They must ensure that sensors, communications capabilities, software components, and cybersecurity controls are consistently produced and validated.” He continues: “As device intelligence increases, manufacturing organisations must balance innovation with rigorous quality processes to ensure products continue to meet the high standards expected in healthcare environments.” Nesterenko highlights that digital tools and data and analytics platforms can help here by improving production efficiency, quality monitoring and traceability across a manufacturer’s value chain. There also needs to be capacity for regular updates and enhancements over time, with minimal disruption to operations. Anyone using a computer today is used to compulsory system or application updates that choose the worst possible time to install. In a healthcare setting, where a fluidic device can be crucial for diagnosis or treatment and demand for services is constant, there is a pressing need for unobtrusive updates that can be deployed easily and rapidly, with minimal resulting downtime. Fail to do that, and not only will care be disrupted, but clinicians’ willingness to use a system is likely to be harmed.

Indeed, the degree of connectedness is such that deployment of medical devices “is increasingly focused on integration and adoption rather than simply installing equipment”, Nesterenko says.

“Healthcare organisations are looking for solutions that can connect seamlessly with existing clinical, operational and IT workflows.” Accordingly, successfully deploying fluidic medical devices that harness intelligent technologies is a multifaceted process. “It requires consideration of interoperability, user training, cybersecurity, data governance and ongoing device management,” he says.

“Successful designs simplify workflows, reduce cognitive burden, and present actionable information at the right time and in the right context.”

Igor Nesterenko

Nesterenko stresses that the greatest value from intelligent technologies in medical devices comes when such devices “support clinicians in delivering care more effectively while helping healthcare systems make better use of their resources”. He says these technological advances are making devices increasingly helpful tools for clinicians: “As sensing, connectivity, analytics and intelligent systems continue to converge, medical devices will become active partners in care delivery, helping clinicians anticipate needs, simplify complexity and make better-informed decisions.

“Our opportunity is to build a future where technology works quietly in the background, empowering caregivers and improving outcomes for millions of patients around the world.” ●
