toelzle Glass Group, one of the leading manufacturers of high- quality pharmaceutical packaging glass, has developed a safe and resource- efficient process for the inner-surface treatment of type 2 glass. EcoSecur is an innovative technique, which enables reliable and precise dosing tailored to the size of each bottle, from 6ml vials to much larger volumes. The regulatory part of the pharmacopoeia, which contains the guidelines for pharmaceutical primary packaging and specific glass containers, defines the properties of type 2 glass and its chemical performance, as well as the principles of production. It does not specifically define the techniques needed for the production of type 2 and, in this aspect, the technologies on the market also differ significantly from one another.

Producing quality products Within the framework of production and related to the product quality, the process capability has become indispensable. This means that the quality of a single container is not sufficient to guarantee the quality of an entire production batch. Therefore, a quality product can only be the result of an extremely efficient and repeatable process, capable of obtaining not only individually compliant products, but a homogeneous population of containers with homogeneous characteristics. With all this in mind, Stoelzle Glass Group has analysed the different manufacturing processes on the market for type 2 glass. The Group has set the goal of further developing the process of the inner coating of the glass, in order to make it repeatable and constant. Stoelzle’s additional aim was to make the manufacturing process of type 2 glass more environmentally friendly than the processes previously available on the market. During an intensive development phase, the best configurations of all important process parameters for the
realisation of the type 2 treatment were identified. This was followed by many hours of design development, laboratory experiments and field applications to determine the best treatment agent, the correct temperatures for carrying out the procedure, the quantities to be dosed and the time of dosing.
Automated industrialisation The introduction of a process automation and automated control in the industrialisation phase was essential for success. Establishing automation in production is necessary, to ensure compliance with all the foreseen conditions at each step of the process and automated control serves for identification of every single deviation that could jeopardise the result. Following this logic, automatic adjustments and relative controls are provided for the overall correct treatment of each bottle. This full automation ensures a continuous manufacturing process in a controlled environment with 100% control using the latest and most advanced inspection machines with fibre optic and chamber inspection systems. production of type 2 glass surpasses the previous technologies on the market in terms of quality, process stability and reliability. Another advantage is that Stoelzle’s process enables a reduction in the use of chemical components by up to 50% through a reduction of CO2
of up
to 80%. As a result, the environmental impact is significantly reduced. By using ammonium sulphate in liquid form, safety aspects of the chemicals used in gaseous form are also be solved. Stoelzle’s product range of its EcoSecur type 2 glass ranges from 6ml to 500ml in white and amber glass. Packaging options are available in all configurations.
