and memorably designed by brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, who were apparently inspired by street lighting. ‘While observing street lamps, Achille and Pier Giacomo began to consider how the shape of the arch made it possible to transport light from above on to objects,’ explain Flos design curators Fabio Calvi and Paolo Brambilla. ‘They then went on to imagine a lamp capable of accomplishing this task by freeing itself from the fixed ceiling fixture.’
The design of the lamp is deceptively simple and precisely engineered. The lamp weighs around 65kg. The base is a parallel piped form in white Carrara marble. The arch is composed of three curvilinear steel sections that channel the electrical cable up to the semispherical lampholder, at a height of two metres.
