Obituary – Ian Menzies


Ian Keith Menzies died on April 26. Born in Liverpool on March 13, 1937, Mr Menzies started in the timber trade as an apprentice with Corkhill-Best in 1953 and then joined Corkhill-Hyslop, needing his father’s permission to go to Ghana to join the office in Takoradi.


Mr Menzies was active in the hardwood trade around the world and was very well- known and respected.

He was president of the North West Timber Trade Association in 1984/85 and was a passionate supporter of the TTBS,

Travis Perkins’s group chief commercial officer Dave Castle joins BMF board

Dave Castle, who is group chief commercial officer and managing director of BSS at Travis Perkins Group has been elected to the board of the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF). He took up his position at the BMF board meeting on July 17. Mr Castle’s career with the Travis Perkins Group began in 2001 as an apprentice. Since then, he has held a variety of positions within the Group, from branch level to leadership roles. He was appointed BSS managing director in 2023, and assumed the added responsibility of chief commercial officer for the Group in May 2024 where he heads up a team which brings together the Group’s extensive buying experience across its merchanting businesses. He has a passion for people- focused leadership, collaboration and business modernisation with a proven track record of being dedicated to meeting customers’ changing needs.

Howarth Timber & Building Supplies has promoted Rob Bailey and Cameron Reid to regional managers.


This follows the retirement of Ian Williams, Howarth’s regional director. Mr Williams joined Howarth in 2017 and “brought with him a strategic vision and passion that has greatly contributed to our regional success”, said a company spokesperson. “Howarth Timber has grown in market share and improved its reputation for dependability and quality during his leadership.”


Rob Bailey has been with the Howarth Timber company for the past 23 years, previously serving as branch manager at the Ashton branch before his most recent promotion.


Cameron Reid entered the building supplies sector through a graduate recruitment company, joining Howarth on a graduate management scheme. He has been with Howarth for approximately 14 years, with the last 11 years spent at the Bury branch.

2007 until 2018 and was national president in 2003/2004. He remained active on the national committee even after retirement and will be sadly missed by all. Mr Menzies is survived by his daughter, Jenny and son-in-law, Richard Carter, who continues to trade with Ghana through RJC Agencies, which Mr Menzies helped to establish.
