TRADE GATEWAY YOUR TIMBER ABP remains committed to supporting the timber industry

As the leading port operator in the UK, with a network of 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales, Associated British Ports (ABP) offers unparalleled expertise in safely handling a wide range of forest products, including timber. We understand that you and your customers need safe and time-efficient handling, keeping control of your costs. ABP’s extensive portfolio of facilities, backed by well-equipped stevedoring operations and other services, will help your business achieve that objective.

ABP has invested more than £500m in upgrading port facilities and equipment. This includes state-of-the-art terminal facilities, handling equipment and industry-leading storage facilities to serve the forest products market.

Our depth of expertise also includes managing shipping operations, as exemplified by the unique TimberLINK service, which provides sustainable supply chain solutions for roundwood timber from the Argyll peninsula in Scotland.

BUILDING RESILIENT SUPPLY CHAINS ABP remains committed to supporting the timber industry. We support the timber trade, offering a range of services from cargo handling to full inventory management. As the timber industry looks to rebound after a challenging past 12 months, ABP’s resilience and forward-thinking approach ensure it will

continue to play a pivotal role in the UK’s timber supply chain. Despite the current market challenges, ABP is well-prepared to handle this anticipated surge, with its infrastructure and strategic locations ready to accommodate increased volumes of timber. ABP’s strategic positioning remains a key asset. Throughout our network of 21 ports across the UK, our expert and highly trained teams are ready to work in partnership to deliver solutions to business needs. In particular, the port of King’s Lynn in East Anglia is ideally located to serve the timber trade.

King’s Lynn, on average, handles around 200,000m3

of forestry products annually,

with approximately 60 vessel calls. The port has historically managed shipments of up to 5,000m3

of forestry products in a single shipment, demonstrating its capability to handle large volumes efficiently. The recent addition of a barcode system also exemplifies ABP’s commitment to innovation and operational efficiency, ensuring that timber products are handled and stored with precision.

CHAMPIONING SUSTAINABILITY ABP is committed to enabling a more sustainable future. In February 2023, it launched its sustainability strategy, ‘Ready for Tomorrow’, which sets out its plans to decarbonise its own operations by 2040 at the latest, as well as support the wider

decarbonisation of its customers and the UK’s energy transition.

ABP’s timber operations, particularly through the TimberLINK programme, demonstrate a deep commitment to sustainability and innovation. This initiative is not only reducing the environmental impact of timber transport but also ensuring the longevity and growth of the timber industry in Scotland.

Dedicated to transforming how timber is transported in Scotland, TimberLINK is one of ABP’s flagship projects. Since its launch in 2000 with support from a Freight Facilities Grant, TimberLINK has evolved into a critical component of Scotland’s timber transport infrastructure – moving timber from a number of ports in Argyll, which includes ABP’s ports of Ayr and Troon. Transporting approximately 2,200 tonnes of timber per voyage today, TimberLINK is taking the equivalent of around 90 lorries off Scotland’s roads. Since it was launched, the programme has saved over 42,000 tonnes of CO2

of fuel. ■
