Kronospan to produce sawn timber with acquisition of Romania sawmill

Above: The SebeČ™ sawmill is being acquired by Kronospan

Global wood-based panel manufacturing giant Kronospan will now produce sawn timber products for the first time following the acquisition of Ziegler Group’s Sebes sawmill.

,

Kronospan announced on March 3 that it had agreed to acquire the ZG Timber’s Sebes plant in a move which ensures

,

the continuity of operations at the facility, safeguarding 500 local jobs following the insolvency of Ziegler Holding GmbH at the end of last year.

The acquisition agreement was signed on March 1, with the transaction expected to be finalised by mid-year, pending regulatory approvals.

EU commences investigation into Brazilian softwood plywood imports

The EU has started an anti- dumping investigation on Brazilian softwood plywood imports following a complaint by the Softwood Plywood Consortium (SPC). The investigation is being led by the European Commission. A complaint was made on January 20 by the SPC on behalf of the EU softwood plywood industry, alleging that Brazilian softwood plywood imports are being dumped in the EU, thereby injuring the EU plywood sector.

The product subject to investigation is plywood consisting of lamellas not exceeding 6mm thickness, with both outer plies of coniferous wood.

The SPC has provided evidence to the European Commission that imports of the product in question have increased overall in absolute terms and in terms of market share. Evidence

also pointed to the volume and prices of the imported product having a negative impact on the quantities sold and level of prices charged by the EU industry, resulting in substantial adverse impacts for the latter.

The investigation of dumping and injury will relate to the period from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024. Any interested parties wishing to comment on the SPC complaint must do so within 37 days of the March 6 notice.

Exporters of the product in question are invited to participate in the Commission investigation. Unrelated importers of the product are also invited to participate. All questionnaires relating to the investigation are available at CaseAD729. To contact by email – TRADE-AD729-SOFTWOOD- DUMPING@eceuropa.eu

“As part of its strategy to enhance its product offerings, Kronospan will now incorporate sawn timber products into its global portfolio,” the company said in statement. “As a new addition, sawn timber products will complement the company’s existing production of wood- based panels, including particleboard, MDF, and OSB at its Romanian plants in Sebes and Brasov.

,

“Furthermore, Kronospan plans to invest in modernising the Sebes sawmill to further enhance its production capabilities.”

,

Kronospan said the investment highlighted its

ongoing commitment to Romania as an attractive and competitive hub for wood products production.

Kronospan has had a presence in Romania since 1998. The company has invested more than €600m in the country and, along with its two production plants in Brasov (OSB) and Sebes (particleboard and MDF), it currently operates a logistics centre in the Port of Constanta, and several wood collection and recycling centres across Romania.

,

The products are used domestically and are also exported to 75 countries worldwide, including regions such as Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.
