Pakistan
Pakistan’s buffalo prices dropped at the start of October. Sales were at $0.55 for crust, 1.3–1.5mm.
Poland
Polish cow prices benefitted from the stronger European cow market. Selections weighing 26/27kg sold
€0.10–0.15 higher at €0.80. Bull prices were also higher, with 40kg selections selling for €1.25–1.30.
South Africa
Through the autumn, top-quality South African lamb was still selling at $330.00–340.00 per dozen. Lamb
HS1 was steady at $250.00 per dozen and lamb HS2 was also flat at $190.00 to $200.00. Prices for lamb TRA remained unchanged at $140.00 and those for lamb TRB at $100.00.
Spain
Work slowed compared with the summer, but this is an expected seasonal change. Still, prices for lamb and sheepskin held steady through to mid-October. Spanish entrefino for nappa was unchanged at €15.00–16.00. Entrefino doubleface was at €12.00– 12.50. Double face merino prices were at €11.00– 13.50. The lachaune selection remained stable at €5.00–5.50. Prices are ranged to reflect the different regions in Spain, from lower end to top end quality. They are quoted on an FOB origin basis, per piece (5.5–7ft range, 6.5ft average).
After easing during the summer months, Spanish cow prices were higher by October at €0.80 per kilo. Prices for bulls 40kg and up average green weight were a little firmer, selling at €0.95–1.05.
Sweden
Swedish cow prices regained the €0.05 they lost in July, selling for
26
€1.50 per kilo. After softening during the summer, bull prices were €0.10 higher with 34kg and up average green weight selections selling for €1.80.
Turkey
Turkish raw materials continued to decline in the autumn. Bulls were selling at $0.95–1.05/kg while cows
were stable at $0.75–0.80/kg.
The new government was raising interest rates in order to fight inflation, which led commodity and hide prices to decline. Meat prices were high compared with the minimum wage in Turkey, so people are eating less meat. Compared with last year, wet-blue and finished leather exports decreased by 27% but exports of leather products overall increased by 2.5%. Exports to Iraq and Ukraine increased dramatically compared with last year, particularly leather shoes, whose exports increased by 10%.
UK
English prices were decidedly higher by October. The 36kg and up ox was at £0.90/kg. As of 1 July 2023, the UK cattle herd stood at 7.9 million head, 0.9% smaller (70,400 head) than the same point a year ago. The number of females aged over 30 months fell by 2.4% to stand at 2.7 million head, primarily driven by further contraction in the beef herd.
US
After having improved a bit in the late summer, the US market saw prices start to soften as demand for
steers weakened. By October, heavy Texas steers dropped a couple of dollars, selling for $25.00 for 62/64lb selections.
The US cow market was still enjoying good interest in the autumn, but prices had topped out. Sales at steady levels were possible but higher prices were generally out of the question. ●
