Central French 32kg and up were higher by early October at €1.00–1.05. Lighter selections under 32kg were also higher at €0.85–0.90. French Bretagne 32kg and under was higher, selling at € 1.00–1.05/kg. The 32kg and up selection was slightly higher, selling at €1.00–1.05. In October, the French bull market faced uncertainty amid weak orders in upholstery. French Bretagne selections 37kg and up were slightly firmer than our last report at €1.35–1.45. The under 37kg selection remained steady at €1.25–1.30. Among central French hides, the 37kg and up was €0.05 higher at €1.25–1.30 and the 37kg and under category was higher by €0.05–0.10 at €1.05–1.10.
Germany
German cow hide prices were higher in the autumn months. The 25kg and up north German cows were €0.10–
0.15 higher at €0.70–0.75/kg. Lighter weights of 15–24kg were similarly higher at €0.80–0.85. Cow hide prices in southern Germany also rose: 40kg and up selections sold for €1.10–1.15/kg. The 30–39kg selections were higher too, selling at €0.95–1.00. German heifer prices were mainly higher by mid-October. North German 25kg and up were up €0.05 at €0.85/kg and the price was still €0.95 for the 15–24kg from the same region. South German heifers 40kg and up were more than €0.10 higher at €1.23, and the 30–39kg selection was up significantly at €1.15.
The German bull market made some gains in the early autumn. North German bull selections at 40.0– 49.0kg were €0.05–0.10 higher, selling for €1.00- 1.10/kg. South German bulls were also higher at €1.45–1.50 for the 40–49kg selections.
Greece
Prices for lamb and sheep skins from Greece continued to hold price levels steady through mid-October. Sales
of lamb skins (70/20/10) were unchanged at $100.00–120.00 per dozen, pickled. Lamb skins (C2) also remained stable, selling for $40.00 to $45.00 per dozen, pickled.
India
India’s buffalo market prices dropped in early October. Crust 1.4–1.6mm was trading $0.05–$0.10 lower at $0.55–
0.60 per square foot. Crust 0.9-1.1mm was also lower at $0.45–0.50.
The USDA Foreign Anticultural Service forecast for 2024 expects India’s national cattle herd to grow to 307.6 million head, up by some 135,000 head
24 Norway
Norwegian cows lost €0.05 to sell for €1.75. Norwegian bulls, on the other hand, were higher, with the
34kg and up average green weight selections trading at €1.95/kg.

This is a slight increase from the 2023 estimate of 39.96 million head, which is 20,000 head lower than the USDA official 2023 estimate of 39.98 million.
Iran
Iranian markets remained stable through October. Mutton skins (AB) were flat at $130.00 per dozen, pickled. Super mutton skins were unchanged at $50.00. Prices on medium goat skins were steady at $12.00–15.00.
Italy
Italian cow sales were €0.15 higher by mid-October at €0.65-0.70/kg. Italian bull prices also managed to make
gains in the autumn, selling €0.10–0.15 higher at €1.00 for 40kg and up average green weight. With regard to Italian veal, prices rose after having been stable for months. The 18kg and up skins were selling at €4.50–5.00/kg. Selections under 18kg were also higher at €3.80–4.30/kg.
Netherlands
Dutch veal skins prices were steady through mid-October. The 12.5kg selections were unchanged at €4.30– 4.80. Skins at 16.5kg were still at €5.20–5.60. Dutch cow hides were higher, selling at €0.65–0.75 per kilo. All prices quoted are on material delivered to northern Italian tanneries on a 30-day payment schedule.
New Zealand
New Zealand’s market prices were steady to lower into the autumn months. Wet-blue ox, selection
70/30%, 20–24kg, was unchanged at US$43.00 per piece. Heavier 27kg and up dropped by $3.00 to sell for $64.00. Wet-blue heifers were unchanged at $43.00 for the 18–23kg selection. Wet-blue cows, selection 70/30%, were $2.00 lower, selling at $24.00 for 14–18kg.
Nigeria
Nigerian raw material remained unchanged. Cross lamb A was still stable at €2.70/ft2
skins were likewise unchanged at €1.50/ft2
