Extracts from the Hidenet World Reports

Argentina

Argentina’s cattle slaughter totalled 1.23 million head in August, down by 4% from July and the same as in August 2022. Adjusted for business days, the drop from July increases to 9%. The percentage of females was 48.9%, between three and seven-tenths higher than the previous three months, although more than one point below the recent April peak. It is also 5.5 points higher than a year ago.

After remaining stable for an extended period, raw material prices started rising at the end of September. Since our last report, steers gained $0.13 to sell for $0.57 per kilo, cows added $0.16 to sell for $0.46 and heifers rose by $0.13, selling for $0.62.

Australia

Wet-blue ox prices continued to decline in the early autumn. Grade A selections at 23–27kg were selling

$2.00 lower at US$48.00 per piece, as were selections at 18–23kg at $40.00. The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service forecasts that Australian beef supply will recover in 2024 to the point of reaching the sixth-highest production on record. The 2024 forecast is after a significant turning point in 2023, where production is estimated to grow by 16% from the lows of 2021 and 2022 not seen for 25 years because of a strong herd rebuild phase restricting cattle supply for processing. Beef exports are forecast to reach the fourth-highest on record in 2024 and regain some market share in three of its biggest Asian market destinations.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s leather exports dropped by 12.73% in July and August, compared with the same period last

fiscal year. Only the leather goods segment saw growth. In the first two months of fiscal 2023–24, leather exports totalled $194.8m, which was also 4.32% lower than the strategic target set for the period of $203.6m, according to data from the Export Promotion Bureau. Finished leather exports were $20.3m, down by 12.57% from a similar period of last fiscal year and by 0.25% from the strategic target set for the two-month period.
