Raw materials


37kg and above were €0.05 lower at €1.35–1.40. The under 37kg selection was again steady at €1.25–1.30. Among central French hides, the 37kg and above was still weak at €1.20–1.25 and the 37kg and under category was stable at €1.00.


Germany


German cow hide prices were weak through to the start of August. The 25kg and above north German cows


were a few cents lower at €0.60/kg. Lighter weights of 15–24kg were selling at €0.70, which is the low end of the previous price range. Cow hide prices in south Germany were in the same situation: 40kg and above selections were softer at €1.00–1.10/kg. The 30–39kg selections were lower too, selling at €0.80. German heifer prices were mixed in July. North German 25kg and above were unchanged at €0.80/ kg and the price was still €0.90 for the 15–24kg from the same region. South German heifers 40kg and above were €0.10–0.15 lower at €1.10, and the 30–39kg selection was down at €0.80. In the German bull market, north German bull selections at 40–49kg weakened further, selling for €0.90–1.05/kg. South German bulls were also softer at €1.40 for the 40–49kg selections.


Greece


Prices for lamb and sheep skins from Greece stabilised after dropping in early summer. Sales of lamb skins


(70/20/10) were unchanged at $100–120 per dozen, pickled. Lambskins (C2) also settled, selling for $40–45 per dozen, pickled.


India


India’s buffalo market prices held onto steady levels through July. Crust 1.4–1.6mm was trading at


$0.65/ft2 . Crust 0.9–1.1mm was similarly unchanged at $0.55.


Amid a serious slump in the leather business, tanners from Kanpur are increasingly moving to West Bengal in Bangladesh, as well as other regions, according to the Hindustan Times. Tighter pollution control norms, a big jump in the cost of treatment of tannery waste and the lack of orders are taking their toll on business. In addition, a ban on cow slaughter in Uttar Pradesh has hit the availability of cow hides.


Iran


After declining earlier in the year, Iranian markets stabilised and remained steady through July. Mutton skins (AB) were flat at $130.00 per dozen, pickled. Super mutton skins were unchanged at $50.00. Prices on medium goat skins were steady at $12.00–15.00.


36 Norway


Norwegian cow prices held their levels through July at €1.80. Norwegian bulls stabilised after


having softened in the early summer. The 34kg and up average green weight selections were trading at €1.85–1.90/kg.


Pakistan


Pakistan’s buffalo prices were steady through to August. Sales were at $0.60 for crust, 1.3–1.5mm.


Pakistan’s non–textile exports fell by 9.87% to $11.23bn in FY23 compared with $12.46bn last year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). Exports of raw leather decreased by 19.45% while in the value-added leather sector, leather garment exports fell year-on-year by 7.03%.

Italian cow sales were unchanged at €0.50–0.55/kg at the end of July. On the other hand, Italian bull prices


were lower, selling at €0.85–0.90 for 40kg and up average green weight. With regard to Italian veal, prices stabilised after having eased in late spring. The 18kg and above skins were selling at €4.30–4.80/kg. Selections under 18kg were also steady at €3.70–4.20/kg.


Netherlands


Dutch veal skin sellers managed to keep prices stable through the end of July. The 12.5kg selections were


unchanged at €4.30–4.80.


Skins at 16.5kg were still at €5.20–5.60. Dutch cow hides were weak, selling at the low end of the previous range, which is €0.60/kg. All prices quoted are on material delivered to northern Italian tanneries on a 30-day payment schedule.


New Zealand


New Zealand’s market prices eased in the late spring and dropped again in the summer. Wet-blue ox, selection


70/30%, 20–24kg, was down $4.00 at US$43.00 per piece. Heavier 27kg and above lost just $1.00 to sell for $67.00. Wet-blue heifer prices dropped by $4.00 to $43.00 for the 18–23kg selection. Wet-blue cows, selection 70%–30%, were unchanged, selling at $26.00 for 14–18kg.


Nigeria unchanged at €1.50/ft2


Nigerian raw material remained flat. Cross lamb A was steady at €2.70/ft2 crust. ABC goat skins were likewise .
