A

s the summer winds down, it’s time for the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) in Shanghai, China. It will be the first time the fair is being held since the pandemic and the organisers are expecting robust attendance. With leather demand still lagging below expected levels, many will be looking for clues from the fair as to what the last months of 2023 will hold for the industry. A few weeks after ACLE, Lineapelle will take place in Milan, Italy, in September, offering further intel into what we might be able to expect for the final quarter of the year.

Except for the US market, which has managed to firm up steer prices during the mid-summer period while most other regions are still seeing weak levels. Leather demand is the primary driver for sales; however, supply still plays a role in the market, especially when the scenario is as stagnant as it has been.

In this issue, we look at the global cattle supply and what’s going on in the top beef-producing countries. While supply can’t direct market prices, it can boost them under the right conditions. We’ll go out on a limb and say that so far the year has not progressed as most expected but has also not gone as badly as some feared. History shows that the hide market is cyclical and resilient, and there’s no reason to believe it won’t continue that way.
