Argentina


June slaughter was 1.3 million head, 2% more than in May and 15% more than a year ago. Females accounted


for 48.3% of the total, equal to that of May and 1.5 points higher than the same month last year. Steers have been moderating their previous growth and June was the third month they showed a year- on-year drop in slaughter. Argentina’s beef production grew 10% between January and May of this year, compared to the same period in 2022, with both exports and domestic consumption higher, reported the Argentine Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. In the first five months of 2023, 1.357 million tonnes equivalent of bone-in beef were produced. Per capita consumption rose to 50.44kg in May. Raw material prices remained added just $0.01


in July, with steers at $0.44/kg, cows at $0.30 and heifers at $0.49.


Australia


Wet-blue ox prices dropped further in July. Grade A selections at 23–27kg were selling $3.00 lower at US$50.00 per piece, as were selections at 18–23kg at $42.00. Early July saw rain slowing slaughter and beef processing in eastern Australia. Weekly slaughter had dropped from year-to-date peaks of 124,000 head down to 117,548. During the weeks of high slaughter, they were the largest since 2020 during Australia’s drought.


Bangladesh


Exports of leather and leather footwear dropped in FY23, mainly due to reduced orders from Europe.


Data from the country’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) indicates that footwear, the main driver of leather sector export earnings, dropped by 6.9% as Bangladesh shipped leather footwear worth US$703m. Leather exports also fell significantly by 18.45%, at US$123m. Tannery owners at the Tannery Industrial Estate in Savar are establishing their own effluent treatment plants (ETPs) because the central effluent treatment plant (CETP) is still not

functioning. Bay Footwear and Apex Tannery have secured final approval from the Ministry of Industries and are currently in the process of building their treatment plants. Three remaining tanneries – Samina Tannery (Pvt), Sadar Tannery and Bengal Leather Complex – are awaiting approval start setting up their own ETPs.


Benelux


Bull prices in the Benelux area slipped further in July ahead of the Italian tannery closures. Weights of


30–39kg were selling €0.05 lower at €0.90–0.95/kg. On the other hand, selections weighing 40–49kg were still selling for a flat €1.00. Prices are for delivery to northern Italian tanneries on a 30-day payment plan.
