UNILIN FIBREBOARD RECYCLING PLANT GOES OPERATIONAL
European panels producer Unilin has commenced operation of an industrial-scale fiberboard recycling plant at its MDF plant Bazeilles, France. Dieffenbacher’s Fiber2Fiber plant was a central focus in the project, reports Stephen Powney

DF recycling has reached a breakthrough stage in the wood-based
panels industries. For years, recycling fibrerboard effectively enough so the fibres could be reused in industrial new MDF board production seemed a distant possibility. Fledgling technologies were out there but commercial feasibility, investment and demand had not come together to make that a reality. A change in momentum over the past 3-4 years has seen all that change, with plants installed in Spain and France now paving the way. Unilin’s MDF plant in Bazeilles, France became a trailblazer in the autumn of 2025 when industrial scale fibreboard recycling

went live, thereby bringing to fruition a multi-year project at the site. Main plant technology supplier
Dieffenbacher built its Fiber2Fiber plant at the factory. The plant has been fully integrated into the ongoing production process at Unilin’s MDF plant and is successfully producing fibres from recycled fibreboard material. The plant is described as the first in the
world capable of recycling both internal fibreboard waste, such as production waste and residual materials from fibreboard manufacturing, and post-consumer fibreboard material, for example from bulky waste. “We are excited to announce the successful integration of our new Fiber2Fiber plant from Dieffenbacher into our existing
MDF line,” said Jan Gallet, General Manager MDF at Unilin. “The system is unique worldwide, as was the collaboration between our two companies on this project. This innovation allows us to integrate recycled fibres into decorative products such as our Master Oak collection, without compromising on quality.” Dieffenbacher’s scope of supply for Unilin included the fibre transport and storage system, fibre sifters, glue preparation and dosing, PROjet glue-saving system, pneumatic systems and an Emission Control System. The steam explosion vessel for the re-fibreing process was designed by Dieffenbacher Energy in Bludenz, Austria, and optimized for fibreboard recycling.
