It said ongoing geo-political tensions
have led to continued end market demand uncertainty, curtailing any expected demand recovery. A spokesman for a European OSB manufacturer told WBPI that it was “turbulent times”.
“The problem is the war in Iran and its
consequences in very high gas prices and prices for all the chemicals used in OSB,” he said. On April 23, the spokesman said these prices were up by 65%, and still rising. “At the beginning of March, we experienced high energy prices and now that has filtered through to the chemical costs. We had to increase our prices very quickly and have just increased all products by 10%.” He said increased operating costs were
approximately “millions of euros” per month. “I can’t see any change in the next six to eight months either, because we have had to make a commitment on chemicals. Consider that urea is in really short supply and it is needed by other industries too, such as fertilisers.”
PROJECTS Egger’s Wismar OSB plant has been modernised in a project by Siempelkamp. The project was part of the company’s
long-term investment strategy for capacity expansion and sustainability projects at its plants. Investments totalled €248.6m in the first half of its 2025/2026 financial year (in the same period last year it was €218.4m). The project-related shutdown of the
plant was just 52 days. The project aim was to achieve a significant increase in capacity of at least 15% at the OSB plant, which Siempelkamp commissioned in 2000. The project included the installation of new mat formers and the integration of a Contitherm preheating system, while the ContiRoll continuous press was equipped with new hot platens and pressure distribution plates. An improved hydraulic control system was also installed to optimize thickness control. The modernization project was rounded off with completely new electrical equipment and control systems.
The first board produced after the
improvements was on October 29, 2025. Egger produces OSB, MDF and HDF boards as well as laminate flooring at the Wismar plant. In France, Swiss Krono has confirmed it is no longer moving forward with its Orpinia project. French newspaper La Tribune reported that Swiss Krono had announced the project shelving – which had been set for the Landes de Gascogne forest area. The reasons were the continuing poor construction sector, delays in securing grant money, and a fire suffered by Swiss Krono’s existing OSB mill in France at Sully-sur-Loire. The latter mill faced an extensive partial
shutdown period as result of the fire. La Tribune quoted the company’s president Vincent Adam. “Faced with the challenges Swiss Krono

is encountering at the Sully-sur-Loire site, none of the solutions considered meet the necessary conditions to smoothly carry out a project of Orpinia’s scale,” he said. “Resuming production at our OSB unit in Sully-sur-Loire is now our absolute priority and is currently mobilizing all of our resources, teams, and investments,” The Orpinia project was presented in 2024 and had envisaged two phases – a €340m first phase involving a 340,000m3
capacity
and €52m second phase extension up to 600,000m³. In the UK, the permissions process for Kronospan’s 600,000m3
OSB mill project at
Chirk continues. The company was invited to submit environmental details by December 2025, while installation of new power lines to the site is also believed to be a factor. This project will be left in the list of future capacity for now. It would seem unlikely considering the current market environment that we would see this new mill before 2028. Kronospan also has an OSB project
in Tortosa, where it recently added a particleboard mill. The Catalan government and Kronospan signed an agreement in which the Austrian company will build a €150m line for boards made with recycled wood. The regional government has described it as a “strategic boost for Catalonia”, bringing jobs and prosperity to the region. We originally had expected completion down as 2025-2026. There is no update currently, but we would expect an update in the near future.
