COMMENT Ӏ OCTOBER 2024
A LANDMARK MONTH FOR LIFTING
It's been another busy month here at the Cranes Today editorial HQ. It started with a trip to the official launch of Mammoet's SK6000, the world's biggest land-based crane, in The Netherlands. It's always great to see cranes 'in the metal' and this one really is a (magnificent) beast. With its jib, it stands at over 200 metres tall and, to contextualise its 6000-tonne lifting capacity, it would be able to lift everyone in a large football stadium! Mammoet believes the crane is the solution to a hidden bottleneck in the energy transition; this is because there are currently just a few cranes in existence able to handle the increasingly large components being used in the construction of new powerplants and, in particular, offshore windfarms, with the SK6000 now being the strongest of them. Whilst at the event in Westdorpe I was able to fly my drone to get some exclusive video footage. Read the full story and watch the video (including an interview with Oliver Smith, senior commercial manager for offshore wind at Mammoet) via the link in the news story on page 10. Over the last month I also attended the Vertikal Days lifting
and access trade show in the UK. It's always good to catch-up with readers and there was a more international feel at this years' event than in previous years. There was an impressive number of cranes on display, too, including a number of UK market 'firsts'. Whilst there I filmed some interviews that can be watched on our website and LinkedIn pages; go check them out!
