GETTING PUBLISHED IN T&T
Guidance on key steps to offer interesting technical contributions for possible publication in T&T to reach our global audience
One of the mainstays of this magazine is the consistently high quality of scholarly, technical papers and articles that are aimed at satisfying our specialist readership. Whether of tunnel projects, tunnel engineering theory or component assembly/ manufacture, these manuscripts need to be cutting edge and help advance the knowledge and interest of T&T readers. Unfortunately, journalists and editors rarely have the insight,
knowledge and practical experience to equal that of those who are directly involved in the planning, design and construction of tunnel projects. That is why magazines such as T&T are reliant on the expert knowledge of readers to come forth with articles and features that help disseminate tunnelling knowledge. For individuals and engineering consultancies, there are few
better promotional opportunities than by publishing papers or articles in a globally distributed publication such as T&T. Although readers submit their papers/articles on a regular
basis, some of them do not make it to publication as they do not satisfy minimal publishing requirements. The following guidelines will help ensure that relevant papers are not excluded due to inappropriate formats.
SUBJECT MATTER ● Tunnel projects, whether in planning, on site, or completed. ● Theory-style articles: e.g. hazards of shallow urban tunnelling; ventilating the blasting cycle; advances in TBM segment design, etc.
● Research papers or recent conference papers. ● Opinion pieces: e.g. personal perspectives on tunnelling and the practice of it, or how the sector may be improved, etc.
● Suppliers’/manufacturers’ articles: these are welcomed but they must be objective, concise and contain information that readers will find of use. PR-style pieces or those that brazenly promote a product or company will be rejected.
FORMAT ● Articles should be submitted in Microsoft Word and accompanied by images (photographs and/or diagrams); articles should not be submitted as .pdf files.
● Around 2,400 words is usually sufficient for a four-page article with 3-4 good images, but articles can be longer than this, up to a maximum of around 3,500 words.
● Paragraphs should be clearly spaced and there should be no double spacing in the body of the article.
● Any editing applied to articles will be communicated to the author prior to publication. Typically, this will involve minor linguistic changes – to spelling, syntax and grammar – and will be ‘tracked’ to allow authors to see the changes that have been made by the editor.
IMAGES ● Photographs and drawings should be submitted separately as original files in .jpg or .tiff formats.
● Line art such as graphs, diagrams and flowcharts should be in editable .pdf format or .eps (CC2020).
● Images that are embedded in an email or Microsoft Word document cannot be used as they are rarely of high enough resolution - this is a common error.
● Please aim for the highest resolution images available, typically, a resolution of 300dpi at A4, or 1200px along the long dimension. Please include any required photo credits.
● Diagrams should be the original artwork. If diagrams supplied are poor copies, they will not be of high enough resolution and could mean the paper will not be published.
● Images need captions and these should be supplied for each image and included in the body copy of the article.
● If possible, drawings/diagrams with annotations should in addition be supplied with the annotations removed.
