TRANSPORT/RAIL & METRO TUNNELS | SECTOR

DATA FOCUS ON RAIL & METRO TUNNELS

Courtesy of GlobalData, a sister publication of T&T, we take a look at tunnel-based infrastructure project spend which is dominated by the transport sector, itself led in activity by rail & metro, based on figures from the Q3-2023 analysis

While significant capital investment is being made in public infrastructure, including transport such as rail and metro projects – and many with tunnels, budgets have been under pressure. The fiscal squeeze comes mainly from inflationary pressures over the last couple of years and as a result public spending is expected to tighten further in many areas, such as Europe – but not all parts of the world. With much of the demand for tunnel projects

(planning, construction and fit-out) reliant on the development of new public infrastructure, fiscal pressures in some markets such as Europe are expected to cause softening of demand for such construction works, according to the latest ‘Project Insight – Global Tunnel Construction Projects’ update report, for the Third Quarter (Q3-’23), from GlobalData, a T&T sister publication specialising in data and analytics.

The exceptions, it adds, are in China, India, Southeast

Asia, and the US where strategic planning and momentum are moving infrastructure investment forward.

STAGES AND SECTORS Global tunnel-based infrastructure projects, involving all stages of project development – this total is about much more than excavation and construction but includes planning and fit-out –has total project value standing at approximately US$1,130 billion. More than half of that global total of tunnel-based infrastructure projects are in the construction and fit-out stage (57%), and the next main portion are in planning stages, at more than US$300 billion. The global total of tunnel-based infrastructure projects encompasses many sectors. By far it is
