CHINA | ITA AWARDS 2023 & WTC 2024 PREVIEW
CHINA AT SUCCESSES AND WTC 2024 PREPARATIONS
The latest ITA Awards held many plaudits for tunnel projects in China, which is shortly to host the next World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2024), in Shenzhen, in mid-April, and will feature many large projects from across the country in addition to presentations by international tunnellers
With the focus of the global tunnelling community turning to China for the next World Tunnel Congress (WTC 2024), to be held soon in host city Shenzhen (see box panels), it is appropriate to note projects to learn about and potentially visit but also the significant global recognition given to many projects and technologies in China across the last two editions of the ITA Tunnelling Awards. Most recently, the 9th Edition of the awards, organised
by the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) was held in November 2023. The awards were held in conjunction with the Tunnelling Asia 2023 conference, in Mumbai, India, organised by the Tunnelling Association of India (TAI).
Winners from China were as follows:
● Project of the Year (Euro 50 million - Euro 500 million): Shenzhen’s Binhai Avenue Tunnel (Headquarters Base Section) Coastal Wide Underground Space, in the WTC 2024 host city. The arrangement resulted in multi-level underground tunnels.
● Technical Innovation of the Year: Building blocks in a foundation pit – Prefabrication and Assembly Construction Technology for Metro Stations. It was first developed as a construction solution to minimise cold weather site work in Changchun, then further developed for use elsewhere.
● Product/Equipment Innovation of the Year: Three- mode TBM (hard rock, earth pressure, and slurry), developed by CREG to enable switching between modes, helping operational efficiency and safety. A 6.28m-diameter version of the TBM was successfully used on the Luogang to Shuixi section of Guangzhou metro’s Line 7.
In the previous, 8th Edition, ITA Awards the plaudits for works in China were: ● Project of the Year (up to Euro 50 million, including renovation): Guanyinyan Tunnel, which is an urban tunnel built as four unequal-sized tubes providing a two-way traffic across a total of 10 lanes
● Beyond Engineering: A multi pipejacking method to excavate in soft ground for construction of the core part of an urban metro station
● Innovative Underground Space Use: V-column space for the Huangmugang transportation hub, in Shenzhen, the WTC 2024 host city.
