Trailing – only slightly – are France and Switzerland


in terms of their rail/metro activities, which are almost equal when measures by value, overall. Not far behind them is Italy’s rail/metro sector. Then


comes Austria. Those are the countries in Western Europe where rail/


metro development leads the national tunnel-related infrastructure project pipelines. Rail/metro holds smaller shares of overall tunnel-


related infrastructure pipeline activities in the other nations listed in the data - Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, and UK. In fact, the UK is among the lowest rankings for rail/


metro activity of tunnel-related projects, taken across all stages. Of the lesser ranking activity nations, the UK is relatively more focused on tunnel projects involving roads.


NORTHEAST ASIA Looking at activity in Northeast Asia, GlobalData’s Q3-’23 quarterly report tunnel-based infrastructure project pipeline is approximately US$314 billion by value, encompassing all project stages (pre-planning to execution). As noted earlier, this brings the region to second place


ranking globally. Again, the transport sector dominates in this region


too – and with focus of tunnel-based infrastructure projects on rail/metro works, at approximately US$204 million.


The leader, slightly, in rail/metro is the region’s


overall second-ranked nation, Japan – which also has the largest project by value involving tunnels, the Tokyo-Nagoya Maglev rail line that is in early execution and will eventually involve three phases of long tunnel construction. Another Maglev project, the planned Nagoya-Osaka rail line, is the third biggest project in the region. But the second ranked project by value involving


tunnels in the region is in China: the planned Dalian- Yantai undersea rail link. It also has two high-speed rail projects with tunnels that take fourth and furth place project size ranking, by value. The rail/metro pipelines of the two countries are on


par. But overall lead in the transport sector is China due to it also having significant tunnel-related activity in roads projects, unlike Japan. And, they lead world in rail/metro tunnel-related


project activity pipelines – both individually well ahead, by project value, of the nearest nations’ current investment by the leading region, Western Europe: Germany, Switzerland and all others. In fact, the rail/ metro pipelines of China and Japan together are broadly the same as the combined total of top five leaders in Western Europe. China has US$195 billion in value of pipeline activities


in tunnel-related infrastructure projects, giving it 62% of the region’s activity. Almost all of China’s noted activity is in the transport sector, with just over half of that sum for rail/metro activities.
