TRANSPORT/RAIL & METRO TUNNELS | SECTOR
The next countries in ranking are Thailand and
Malaysia, both also dominated by rail/metro activity and each approaching half of the level, by value, of Singapore’s activity. Thailand’s rail/metro work is led by activity on
Bangkok metro’s Orange Line and the MRT’s Purple Line (Bang Yai-Rat Burana), both in execution phase. While Singapore and Thailand’s total activity
values are focused on execution stage works, most of Malaysia’s is in pre-execution/procurement – for the Klang Valley MRT, Line 3, in pre-execution phase. It also has the Melaka-Dumai undersea rail tunnel project in planning.
EASTERN EUROPE In Eastern Europe, the tunnels-related infrastructure activity is led by far by Russia and is primarily on rail/ metro projects at US$65 billion, dominated by metro works in Moscow. Next is Romania and Turkey, relatively far less activity
though, again, with transport sectors dominated by rail/ metro. The region has a total pipeline (planning to execution)
of tunnel-related infrastructure activities at almost US$76 billion, two-thirds of which is for works in execution. The leaders are Russia, Romania and Turkey. Russia has the largest pipeline of tunnel-related
infrastructure activities, which at almost US$35 billion is almost half the regional total across sectors, and more than half of the rail/metro sub-sector’s activity. Almost all of those activities are in execution stage (Moscow metro). The next nation in execution stage ranking is Poland (Warsaw metro, Line 2). Mostly in procurement/pre-execution stage are rail/
metro activities for Romania (Bucharest metro Line 5) and Turkey.
SOUTH ASIA India leads tunnel-related infrastructure activity in South Asia but rail/metro holds a relatively small share – road tunnels being the key area of transport. Rail/metro tunnel-related projects activity is less than 15% that of road tunnels, and slightly more than half of the region’s activity in water supply and sewage treatment systems. The South Asian tunnel-related infrastructure pipeline
is values at almost US$40 billion in total, weighted heavily (75%) to the combination of pre-execution/ procurement and execution/construction.
AUSTRALASIA It is the opposite balance in Australasia – rail/metro tunnel-related activities dominate, totalling almost US$36 billion across the range if stages (planning to execution). But the dominance is not too much, as road tunnel activities are more than US$28 billion. In total, overall tunnel-related infrastructure activities
in Australia is just over US$65 billion (planning stages to executions, and encompassing civil and other works). About half of Australia’s tunnel infrastructure is rail/
metro, almost four times as much the sub-sector is in New Zealand. In the latter, though, rail/metro accounts for more than half of the infrastructure tunnels. In both countries the most activity is in the execution
phase although Australia has notable volumes of tunnel-related infrastructure activities in planning and procurement stages. Overall, Australia has almost US$55 billion of pipeline
activity, split into more than US$37 billion in execution, US$8 billion in pre-execution/procurement activity and slightly more – over US$9 billion – in planning. In terms of rail/metro, one of the prime projects in the country noted by GlobalData is Sydney Metro West. The latest quarterly report also notes the country as a whole is facing labour and skills shortages, expected to impact costs and schedules, and lead to budget pressures. New Zealand’s total of slightly more than US$10 billion
breaks down as approaching US$9 billion in execution and less than US$2 billion in pre-execution/procurement activity. There are no listed figures in pre-planning and planning stages.
LATIN AMERICA Rail/metro is the main sub-sector of activity in tunnel- related transport infrastructure – and all tunnel-related infrastructure – in Latin America. Its value is just over US$30 billion across all stages (planning phases to execution) over the continent, says GlobalData. By a clear margin the leading nation in rail/metro
activities with underground-related works is Colombia, at about US$13 billion across all stages. It is followed by a cluster of rail/metro activities by Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Chile. Most activity is in execution stage across the region,
including for the leader, Colombia (Bogota metro) but also Mexico and Brazil whereas in Argentina the balance is toward planning. In Chile, while execution is the larger activity it still has relatively sizeable planning activity.
