Chennai metro, India, recently saw a sequence of celebrations with a series of TBM breakthroughs by Terratec machines being used by contractor Tata Projects Ltd on parts of its tunnelling works on the Phase 2 expansion project. The metro network is already the fourth longest in

India and is being expanded by the owner and operator, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. Phase 2 includes three new Corridor branches (Corridors 3-5) adding a total of almost 116km to the network and 119 stations. Corridor 3 is 45.4km long and runs (north-to-south)

from Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri Sipcot, including approximately 26km of underground line. In total, the Corridor includes 47 stations – 28 of which are underground. Most tunnelling and underground works on Corridors

3-5 are associated with Corridor 3. At the northern end of Corridor 3, near Madhavaram, Tata Projects is working

on the Lot TU01 package. Tata was awarded the contract in May 2021 with a 42 month deadline for completion – by late 2024/early 2025. Tunnelling works on Lot TU01extend through a 9km-

long section between Venugopal Nagar (just north of Madhavaram Milk Colony) and Kellys stations. For the Lot, Tata Projects is using a total of seven TBMs – five of which are supplied by Terratec. With the twin tunnels, the tunnel boring on the Lot totals 18km. The five 6.61m-diameter Terratec earth pressure

balance machines (EPBMs) are: new machines with code numbers S96-S99; and, S81B (used previously on Pune metro). Delivery of the machines started through mid-2022 onward, after the machines passed their factory acceptance tests (FATs) and were shipped to site. Tunnel boring with the first Terratec machine commenced in October 2022.
