COMMENT Artificial intelligence - way to go!
Artificial intelligence, it seems, is the way to go for the textile care industry, especially the big laundries. As we find out in our special coverage this issue, production and efficincies are improved and the dreaded labour shortage is staved off. It also helps with sustainability goals and the constant harvesting of data to fine-hone performance can only be a good thing. Humans will be needed, you will be pleased to hear, even if it is jiust to deal with the small pieces and maintaining the machines, while Archie, the Iron Man (a character in the Lion comic in days gone by) deals with the big stuff.
Taking that a bit further, it would actually be a nightmare if robots took over completely because there would be no need for them at all as robots don’t need, clothes, workwear or bedding and towels or crisp tablecloths and napkins. Perhaps drycleaning would have a renaissance to clean them and their accessories and accoutrements with solvents? And maybe give them a quick oil change. Who knows? But I digress.
AI is a perfectly good solution for the textile care industry but for editorial content in LCNi it is a no-go area. I have experimented with ChatGPT and have decided to have no truck with it. Some newspapers are using it to background stories, and they acknowledge it. So good for them. However, this research must still be checked carefully. And it is only as good as the questions you ask it. It cannot predict, it can only look back (which is quite reassuring). I have decided that while I am editor of LCNi I will continue do my own research and write my own stories. If I make mistakes, they will be my mistakes and I will own them.
Have a wonderfully intelligent and brainy May.
