UK PORT CRANE DUO RUN ON HYDROTREATED VEGETABLE OILS


T


he UK’s Port of Dover has installed two Liebherr mobile harbour cranes that run on hydrotreated vegetable oils


(HVO), a renewable diesel fuel source. Using HVO can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% when compared with conventional fossil- derived diesel, says Liebherr. The company also claimed it’s the first time that the fuel has been used in such circumstances in the UK. HVO can now be used in the majority


of Liebherr cranes, in pure form or in addition to fossil diesel. As well as supporting the port’s drive


towards achieving its decarbonisation targets, the cranes – an LHM 280 and LHM 550 – have been installed “to strengthen a fleet of equipment that enables the multi-purpose terminal to handle and distribute all types of cargo”. The LHM 550 is the larger of the pair. It is able to lift 104t with a maximum reach of 54m. The LHM 280, meanwhile, has an 84t lift capacity and will reach out to 40m. Both can handle steel, breakbulk, containers, palletised fruit, and other loads. The Port of Dover said that the


robust design of the Liebherr LHM cranes was an important consideration when procuring them, especially given


the exposed and windy nature of the terminal. The cranes can work in wind speeds of up to a Force 9 severe gale (75-88km/h), meaning vessels can be unloaded all year round, in almost all weather conditions. Meanwhile, three new Liebherr mobile harbour cranes have joining the fleet at Noatum port terminals in Castellon, Sagunto and Tarragona in Spain. The three terminals will get the hybrid drive LHM 420 as well as the LHM 550 models. With their carrying capacity of 124t and 144t, respectively, the LHM 420 and LHM 550 can handle a variety of cargo. “Liebherr is pleased to contribute


to our customers’ strategic value to provide continuous improvements. For our Spanish client Noatum, this includes supporting them in their aim to reduce their overall environmental footprint while still meeting the demands of increased global cargo traffic both in terms of volume and mass,” said Juan Carlos Jiménez, divisional manager, Maritime Cranes, Liebherr Ibérica. “The LHM 420 and LHM 550 meet


their specific tonnage and diverse cargo needs at their… terminals.” Elsewhere in Spain, terminal operator Cosco Shipping Ports (CSP) Spain has ordered 11 hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) from Konecranes, with six units destined for the company’s terminal in Bilbao and the remaining five for its terminal in Valencia. The cranes’ hybrid drives allow for an up to 50% reduction in diesel fuel consumption compared to conventional RTGs. The order, worth approximately €20m,


was booked in Q3 2022. In further Konecranes news, Terminal


Del Golfo (TDG) has ordered an eco- efficient Generation 6 Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane for its operation in La Spezia in north-western Italy. The order was booked in July 2022 and the crane will be delivered in the first quarter of 2023. The Port of Houston in Texas, US, too has ordered 14 hybrid-powered Konecranes RTGs for its Barbours Cut Container Terminal and 12 hybrid RTGs for the Bayport

news from the Port of Miami Crane Management (PMCM) is that it will continue the digital transformation of its business by installing Paceco Momentum’s digitalisation tool – the Paceco Spyder – on three ship-to-shore (STS) cranes. A further two cranes will get the system at a later date, to go with the six STS cranes that had the tool installed back in 2020. That takes the total number of cranes featuring the Paceco Spyder system to 11. The Paceco Spyder offers a number


of features, such as a real-time crane working view, which produces data on, for example, container movement, brake status, electrical consumption and movement cycles. Real-time information about complete asset status provides maintenance alarms information, for instance, while the system will also generate automated customised operational and technical reports on a range of key performance indicators. ●
