LIFTEX 2025 Magnetic Rope Testing to detect deterioration

Is Magnetic Rope Testing an expensive luxury or an essential tool? The hidden dangers within wire ropes often create uncertainty for inspectors – particularly with certain rope types and applications. It’s well known that rotation- resistant ropes are especially prone to internal deterioration, largely due to the way they are designed and manufactured. The image below shows a rope that was removed from service following a Magnetic

Rope Test (MRT). After stripping away the outer strands, the second layer revealed several internal wire breaks – damage that would have gone undetected through visual inspection alone. Hidden deterioration is always a cause for concern. While some internal issues can be identifiable through visual cues, others are through measurements. A rope may contain serious internal damage that even the most

experienced inspector could miss. In fact, when a rotation-resistant rope shows fatigue- type wire breaks on its outer surface, there’s often a strong likelihood that many more breaks are concealed beneath – potentially leaving ropes in service that are unsafe. This is where Magnetic Rope Testing becomes invaluable. MRT enables inspectors to detect both internal and external deterioration, providing the data needed to make accurate, well-informed decisions about a rope’s true condition. In 2024, Tensology conducted 996 MRT inspections across various industries and applications – all with one shared goal: to give clients confidence that their ropes remain safe and serviceable.
