Liebherr is celebrating 25 years of its RTG cranes.

In fact, Liebherr is celebrating 25 years of its Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes, this year, a milestone that marks a quarter-century of exceptional performance, innovation, and reliability in container handling. Since its debut, the Liebherr RTG has become a cornerstone in the port industry, playing a vital role in reshaping terminal operations worldwide. The crane is recognized for its remarkable efficiency, robust performance, and cutting-edge technology, which has made it one of the most trusted solutions for container handling across the globe. The success of the Liebherr RTG lies in its design, driven by Liebherr’s custom-built electrical drive and control system. The crane’s eight-rope reeving system ensures superior anti-sway performance in both trolley and gantry directions, stabilizing loads and increasing productivity. This feature not only enhances performance but also helps reduce driver fatigue, making it a favorite among port operators and management alike. Furthermore, the RTG’s single hoist drum solution offers a more compact, energy-efficient design that is easier to maintain, showcasing Liebherr’s commitment to quality and efficiency. “Sustainability and innovation have been at the core of the Liebherr RTG’s success

over the past 25 years. By delivering precision-engineered solutions that meet the needs of our customers, we have established a legacy of excellence. Looking ahead, Liebherr is poised to continue driving the future of container handling with exciting new developments,” said Charlie McCarthy, managing director, Engineering, Liebherr Container Cranes. As the demand for greener solutions in the shipping industry grows, Liebherr has pioneered several environmentally conscious technologies. The company introduced its first dual-powered RTG, which combined a genset with a cable reeling drum, marking the beginning of a shift toward more sustainable operations. The RTG has since evolved with the introduction of fully electric models and hybrid cranes, which use energy capture and storage systems to minimize environmental impact without compromising productivity. Liebherr’s commitment to sustainability ensures that each new generation of RTGs continues to reduce emissions and energy consumption, contributing to a more sustainable future for port operations. The Liebherr RTG has also remained

at the forefront of automation and productivity. Over the years, the crane has

integrated advanced technologies like automatic steering, destination control, and stack profiling, which have evolved into fully automated and remote-operated solutions. Today, Liebherr offers both full and semi-automatic RTGs, allowing ports to maximize efficiency and precision in their operations.

Declan O’Sullivan, MD, sales at Liebherr Container Cranes, reflected on the RTG’s success over the years. “Meeting and exceeding customer expectations has always been our priority. The Liebherr RTG’s journey to date reflects our commitment to understanding and addressing the evolving needs of our customers,” he said. “As we mark the occasion of 25 years, we remain focused on delivering solutions that will continue to drive success for ports and terminals worldwide.” As Liebherr celebrates this important

milestone, the company is also looking to the future, where sustainability, innovation, and trustworthiness will continue to define the RTG’s legacy. With advancements in technology and a commitment to greener practices, Liebherr is preparing for the next 25 years of excellence in container handling.
