CHARITY
Tim Styles, a former police officer from Devon and Cornwall Police, last month took on one of the most exciting challenges by cycling to Land’s End to John o’ Groats and back to Land’s End again to help raise funds to support those homeless in Cornwall - dubbing his challenge as ‘LEGOGLE’

sporting activities at Harbour’s supported accommodation sites, including getting bikes and other sports and outdoor equipment. “A huge thank you to everyone who has
donated to my JustGiving page so far, it’s so appreciated.”
Chair of Harbour Housing’s volunteer board of trustees, Mark Steer, said, “I come into contact with many trustees from lots of charities in my role as chairperson of Harbour Housing. “I am in awe of the lengths that Tim goes
Tim, who spent four years in the Metropolitan Police Service before transferring to Devon and Cornwall Police for a further three years, took on the LEJOGLE ride on June 15, a journey of 1,900 miles that he aimed to complete in under 10 days. Tim cycled over 200 miles a day to reach this ambitious target. Tim used this cycling challenge to raise awareness and funds for Harbour Housing. This Cornish charity provides support, accommodation and outreach to people
facing or experiencing homelessness with multiple needs across the county. Like last year, Tim undertook a similar ride completely unsupported, meaning Tim rode solo, carrying all his gear, food and equipment without the safety net of a support vehicle and team following behind. Instead of staying at hotels or B&Bs during the ride, Tim slept outside in bus shelters and fields in a bivvy bag to recognise the realities faced by people sleeping rough in Cornwall and throughout the UK. Tim revealed: “I haven’t always been into fitness and cycling though, until my mid- thirties, I smoked 60 a day and wouldn’t

have dreamt of ever doing something like this. I wanted to show what is possible for people over 60 and for those who have totally changed their lives.”
Tim explained why he is raising money for Harbour Housing: “I have been a volunteer trustee for Harbour Housing for over 10 years and I will support them until

the day I die.
“Harbour provides accommodation and support to people affected by homelessness and works with them to overcome their challenges and transition into independent living. “One of the benefits residents get from
staying with Harbour is it is not just a roof over their heads but also the tailored support and activities provided as well. “These activities are facilitated by
volunteers and staff, and it is great to get the residents engaged particularly in sport and trying new things outdoors. “So, this year whatever I raise will go towards encouraging participation in

It does not discriminate based on behaviours or issues the person confronts, such as addictions or mental ill health. At all its properties it provides a safe environment and the necessary person- centred support to help the individual transition towards a life of independent living.
Tim completed the challenge in just under 12 days, battling a headwind all the way home, fighting fatigue
and overcoming several injuries and technical mishaps. “At Harbour, we could not be prouder and more amazed by his heroic efforts, and we are so very grateful for his dedication and commitment to raising funds for our charity,” added Mark.
Tim nearly tripled his fundraising target by raising an incredible £2,717 for Harbour Housing. He described completing this challenge as “The greatest achievement in sport of my life so far”.
