Due to the success of the Lionesses winning the Euros in 2022, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) decided to incorporate the empowerment of women by embedding a new plan to keep women and girls safe during the summer months in the city and towns, the operation known as Operation Lioness

In June 2022, Superintendent James Faulkner and the force put together a three-pillar plan to look at safe spaces within the nighttime economies, public and green spaces to ensure women and girls could move safely around. “Greater Manchester is a large conurbation mix of urban and rural, predominantly urban, with 10 local authority areas within the area,” Supt. Faulkner explained. “We wanted an operation that covered the three pillars and provided reassurance and preventative work for our busy town centres across the summer months.
