I stood for the National Board as I wanted to help as many people as possible and

I joined South Wales Police in 1999 and now have 23 years’ service. I held numerous positions in my local South Wales Federation before being elected to be part of the National Board, a position I have held for several years. I am one of the National Board members


that has been elected by the Welsh region and I have the honour of representing my peers in North Wales, Gwent, Dyfed Powys, and South Wales. I am immensely proud to represent Wales at the National Board. I am extremely passionate about equality and the wellbeing of police officers. Never


PAUL MATTHEWS


My career in policing started in 2000 with the Met, initially working on response in Greenwich before moving to Hillingdon. After a couple of years in Wiltshire Police, I decided to return to the Met and took up various roles in the CID, becoming a detective in 2009. I went on to work in counter terrorism before returning to Borough and was promoted to detective sergeant in 2016 and posted to the Hammersmith and Fulham crime squad. I have been police officer for 19 years now and initially joined Hampshire as a special constable in June 1998 before moving to Constabulary where I have spent most of my policing career. Throughout this period of time, I have predominantly been a frontline police officer on 24/7 response

I now have the chance to do this as the lead for custody, CBRN and conduct and performance. I also represent region three which includes Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Mercia and West Midlands. I hope to build on the fantastic work Phill Matthews and Tiff Lynch have done on the conduct and performance portfolio and I am excited to see where the journey takes me. I am absolutely committed to giving the membership the best service possible


has it been so challenging for colleagues who deal with traumatic incidents on a day- to-day basis and the service needs to do more to support its officers. One of my personal achievements was setting up the Welsh Affairs business area several years ago. This allows Welsh colleagues and National Board members to work together to better understand the unique position of Wales working in a devolved environment. The organisation now has a greater knowledge and interest in Wales, we focus all pan-Wales issues and engage with stakeholders for the benefit of our members and PFEW.


I lead on race for the National Board, and I am currently the secretary for the


cuts in police pay, pensions and conditions. I went on to represent officers in several high-profile cases such as the Daniel Morgan enquiry and inquests into the murders by Steven Port. I was selected as the region eight sergeants’ rep for the National Board in June 2022, which includes the Met and City of London, and I am the national lead for professional development and disability. I hope to use my position to influence changes to police recruitment, training and promotion processes as well as to provide a voice for disabled officers so policing can be more inclusive.
