Her reign of 70 years and 214 days is the longest of any British Monarch in history. Her reign is only superseded in world history by that of Louis XIV of France, who ruled for 72 years. Dedicating her life to public
service as one of the most important elements of her work. Patron of over 600 organisations and charities, it is estimated that she raised over £1.4 billion for her patronages during her reign. As servants of the Crown, the police family have enjoyed a close relationship with the Queen throughout the years. From the Queen opening police stations up and down the country, to the policing presence at Jubilee celebrations, Royal Weddings, Royal funerals and other
Queen’s Policing Medal. Originally established in 1909 as the King’s Police Medal, it was rebranded in 1954. The accolade is awarded to police for gallantry or distinguished service. Alongside this, every edition of the New Year’s Honours list and the Queen’s Birthday Honours sees police officers of all ranks and tenure recognised for their outstanding contribution to policing. The 2022 Birthday Honours List saw 18 officers recognised. In 2019, the Police Federation of England and Wales reached their centenary and, as is tradition, received a letter from the Queen, a now treasured memento of a long history. Following her death aged
service, much like police officers, Queen Elizabeth II undertook over 100 royal tours and countless state visits. Travel in the UK and overseas dominated much of her working life. Before becoming Queen, she had said, “There is none of my father’s subjects from the oldest to the youngest whom I do not wish to greet.” During

prestigious events, police officers and Her Majesty were often found side by side. The respect shown from each side to the other has been clear for all to see. Each year, the Queen delighted in presenting deserving officers with the
96, many have shared stories of their time meeting the Queen. All have praised her ability to put people at ease in her presence and to keep a sense of humour about her. One such story, shared
by journalist Penny Junor, spoke of the time that an inexperienced police officer made the unfortunate mistake of failing to recognise the Queen and Princess Anne, as he pulled their official car over in a ‘painstakingly awkward’ exchange.
