On 8 September 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died. After seven decades serving as monarch, Queen Elizabeth II was a paragon of our society.
In a special tribute, we take a look back at her life and legacy as we mourn the loss of the longest serving British monarch

As Princess Elizabeth, in 1945 she became the first female member of the Royal Family to join the Armed Services, working in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War. Alongside her sister Margaret, she snuck out of the
later Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh - a marriage which lasted 73 years until his death in April 2021, aged 99. She called him her ‘strength and stay’. They had four children; King Charles III, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. With eight grandchildren and twelve great- grandchildren, family was always close to her heart. Upon her father’s death in 1952, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II. The coronation took place on 2 June 1953 and was the first
ever televised coronation of a monarch. An estimated 27 million people in Britain watched the ceremony on television and 11 million listened on the radio - the population of Britain at the time was just over 36 million.
