2021 presented new challenges for policing as the nation began to function again following the height of the pandemic. We look back at the past 12 months, and reflect on this year’s talking points and highlights.
JANUARY
As England went back into lockdown, the Federation continued to lobby the Government to prioritise police officers for the vaccine. It also seized the opportunity to give evidence to the Home Affairs Select Committee to highlight the damaging impact of lengthy disciplinary investigations as part of its Time Limits campaign.
FEBRUARY
The Prime Minster announced the roadmap out of lockdown, and we called for clarity on the ever-changing rules.
An open letter to the Government was signed by all 43 branches of the Federation to keep pushing for urgent vaccine prioritisation.
MARCH
A new bill was created thanks to years of Federation campaigning to better protect officers. The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill will allow Special Constables to join the Federation, see an establishment
APRIL
We offered our condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family following the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh.
The Federation pushed back on the Government’s controversial plans to bring back league tables and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services praised officers for responding with “dedication and commitment” to the challenge of policing the Covid-19 pandemic.
MAY
National Federation Chair John Apter penned an emotional open letter to police colleagues and members of the public, reflecting on a challenging year of policing during a pandemic. He said: “To those officers, you should be incredibly proud.”

The Federation also learnt it will have a role in the training of new Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigators by educating them on how its conduct and performance liaison officers (CAPLOs),

JUNE
We celebrated officers being recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list and our Annual Conference finally arrived after a two-year wait. It was kicked off with a speech from the Prime Minister who praised police officers for their hard work. The Home Secretary also told officers: “I’ve got your backs”. Policing Minister Kit Malthouse admitted regret over the decision not to prioritise officers for the vaccine.
