A message from National Federation Chair John Apter


I cannot believe we are already at the end of 2021 and Christmas is fast approaching. I am sure, like me, you are thinking it has been another demanding year and wondering where the time has gone.


Policing is always challenging, and each year presents new hurdles to overcome. Last year it was dealing with the height of the pandemic and the changing rules and legislation – unprecedented times for us all. This year you have continued to deal with continuing Covid lockdowns and restrictions, demonstrating professionalism, commitment and dedication during some really tough and uncertain periods. We have faced large scale and often


violent protests, provided mutual aid for G7 and COP26, as well as juggling the demands of day-to-day policing. In addition, we have all had to face an unfair blanket criticism following the isolated actions of some individuals who brought shame on policing. We need to learn from these, make changes where necessary and put safeguards in place to restore the relationship between the police and the public. But let’s never forget, the vast majority of the public do value the police - they support us and what we do. Next year promises to be another


tough year, but hopefully we will move on from the pandemic, we’ll see the introduction of a Police Covenant in law and the country’s improving finances will leave the Government with no excuses and nowhere to hide when it comes to police pay. Rest assured, we will continue to push Government for fair pay and an independent pay award mechanism which does not have its hands tied by the Home Office. I know many of you will be working


over the festive period and our brilliant local Fed reps will be there to support you. Please look after yourselves and look after each other. Finally, I want to thank you for all you
