officers arrested a dangerous individual who was armed with knives and a meat cleaver.

In March 2021, PC Simon Toft and

PC Alicia Snowden attended a call from a pharmacy following the receipt of information that an armed robbery was in progress. The incident began with a man

entering the premises in possession of a hammer and threatening staff with a knife. He then left the pharmacy and assaulted a member of the public while she sat in her car.

The man was located in a nearby

Medical Centre in possession of an axe and several kitchen knives, and was

his Taser, the man ripped the wires from his body and tried to grab the pole once more. PC Snowden, who had just finished the first five weeks of her tutor phase, ran towards the male without hesitation and kicked the metal object away. It was only after Taser was drawn again that the attacker was placed in handcuffs, while reaching for knives from his pocket and trying to grab a meat cleaver from a backpack. Greater

Manchester Police Federation Chair Stu Berry said: “This was a dangerous, dynamic and escalating situation, and for Alicia in particular it was so soon into her service as a police officer. She deserves high

praise for how she handled herself and her actions that day. As does Simon – for both his outstanding police work and how he cared for and guided his colleague.”

Region 3 – West Midlands Police Off-duty PC Matthew Evans heroically

tackled a knifeman who stabbed an emergency services worker in the heart. Witnessing the attack near a hospital

in October 2019, he immediately intervened, putting himself between the attacker and his victim. PC Evans tackled and disarmed the man who was high on drink and drugs

PC Matthew Evans of West Midlands Police (centre) is

congratulated by National Federation Chair John Apter (left) and Paul Griffiths, President of the Police Superintendents’ Association.
