LOOKBACK
POLICE PAY – THEN AND NOW
Concerns about police officers’ pay are etched in history as revealed in the POLICE’s 1968 year end edition
For this edition’s Look Back, we bring to you some revealing clips from the first volume of POLICE magazine from 1968; Vol 1. No.4. Often the rose-tinted glasses that magically appear when we begin
to remember the ‘good old’ days of policing blind us from some of the realities faced at the time.
A casual flick through these pages revealed an interesting look at police pay, specifically the pay for policemen not policewomen who were paid at an inferior scale. There remain some serious issues that need to be addressed in modern policing. Police officers’ pay continues to be one of our biggest areas of concern as we campaign for Fair Pay for police officers in England and Wales.
(in 1968)
A letter (to the bottom right) to the editor also caught our eye, perhaps because this may appear to be as relevant today as it did in 1968. An informed reader felt passionate enough to write in and express their opinion of how protests should be policed. It’s interesting to note that after 56 years similar concerns remain about regulations and procedures governing policing demonstrations despite what some may try and have the public think.
