Singapore has several farming precincts that, together, meet about 10 per cent of local demand for leafy vegetables, fish and eggs. By 2030, this will increase to 30 per cent with new aggrotech zones and hi-tech farms29
. The
building group found that if commercial-scale farming were embedded within, say, residential and industrial estates, domestic production could satisfy all of the city’s demand for leafy vegetables30
. The infrastructure group proposed
new typologies for meat, grain and fruit. Typically, these staples need more land than leafy vegetables; however, studies have shown that production can be intensified with technologies and typologies. New vertical farms were imagined over elements of infrastructure —for instance, fruit farms above train depots. Sites for additional aggrotech zones were identified, including floating aquaponics barges off the Singapore coast. If these were to be accompanied by a substantial reduction in food waste—currently, about a fifth of all food is thrown away every year—and coupled with a dietary change (i.e., less meat), Singapore could, in time, meet the nutritional needs of its population31
