FUTURARC INTERVIEW

Courage to act, courage to teach, courage to do beyond.

My goal is to help guide young professionals, especially females and members of minority groups, and enable them to step up as creative equals to others in the field. With our society today so focused on passion, I also want to teach them compassion and how we can use our passion to not only find ourselves, but also benefit others.

CK: How are you and your company coping with the pandemic situation now? KV: It’s been a wake-up call for us to change, but also to remain positive. I see this pandemic as a perfect opportunity to advocate for more public green spaces, better environmental approaches, urban climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation and more pressing issues. There’s never been a better time to work for the survival of humanity. It’s like staying up all night, under pressure to submit your architectural drawings and model just in time for the deadline. We’ve had enough people talk and study about it—which is great—but we need more doers now more than ever.

CK: I like what you said about bringing about change—more action and less talking. KV: We each need to act now, but one person alone can’t fix a global issue. We need the combined efforts of a diverse range of individuals and their unique ideas and skills. The more brains the merrier! Especially with the sense of emergency of nowness, like our house is on fire.

CK: Everyone has to contribute and play their part, from governments to individual stakeholders. KV: Everyone has the potential to become a change agent. To become so, they need to step away from their business-as-usual mentality and comfort zones, and exert themselves and push their boundaries. That is how we can go beyond our known abilities and how good change happens.
