point of sale...point of sale... DIESEL GES TE-T-TE ITH THE HybRIDS (AD IS)

Most private hire drivers keep a very close eye on running costs with fuel being the single most important factor. A driver’s search for a fuel- efficient new taxi will invariably end up with a comparison of hybrids and diesels. For many, a diesel engine remains first choice.

but diesels are the ad gus, right?

Motor technology and efficiency has come a long way in recent years. There have been many new regulations which have forced makers to up their game in order to conform. Rob Breuilly of The Taxi Shop explains: “Not so long ago, taxi drivers were being encouraged to buy diesels, as they were seen to be better for the environment. But now a new lobby is out to get the diesel driver. They are spouting a lot anti-diesel rhetoric, but it is misguided. People think diesel cars are the biggest cause of air pollution in the UK. Rub- bish! Coal-fired power stations are the country’s biggest polluter by miles.”

Every single diesel car and bus now on sale in the UK must meet very strict ‘Euro-6’ emissions standards. The environmental benefits of Euro 6-compliant cars are massive and those buying a new vehicle today can be confident it meets the latest standards.

How to choose etween hrids and diesels

Making the right choice between a hybrid and a diesel depends largely on where you work and the type of fares you tend to get. In short, if you’re working central London then a hybrid might be a good choice. If

you work outside of the very centre and tend to travel at a higher aver- age speed — for example in a town with dual carriageways and more free-flowing traffic — then diesel may well be the way to go. Rob Breuilly explains the hybrid concept: ‘Hybrid’ really means where there are two ways to power the vehicle, typically a smallish petrol en- gine with a battery-powered electric motor working together or at dif- ferent times. “You can recharge some hybrid cars at charging stations: there are about 7,500 around the UK. But most batteries are charged while the car is moving, when the brakes are applied. The kinetic energy from stopping is converted into battery power, it’s a very clever technology. “So you can begin to see why hybrid cars are efficient in big cities where there is a lot of start-stop driving. If you are mostly using the battery power — with the battery recharging itself every time your brake — then you aren’t going to use much petrol. “On the other hand, if you are driving at steady, higher speeds, then diesel is more economical. The Astra Sports Tourer is an excellent diesel taxi that is selling well right now. Diesels tend to run at lower speeds than petrol motors, which also improves fuel economy.” So it would appear that both diesel and hybrid taxis are both doing their bit for the environment and cutting fuel bills. Which you opt for depends more on the kind of work you do, the most common runs you make.
