...IN THE NEWS...IN THE SHOREHAM CHAUFFEUR DIED ON WAY TO PICK UP BRIDE-TO-BE

The chauffeur who died in the Shoreham air crash has been named as a former soldier who dedicat- ed his life to public service.

Maurice Abrahams, 76, was killed when his Daimler limousine was hit by the Hawk- er Hunter jet as it exploded into a fire- ball on the A27 in August.

The father of two was on his way to pick up bride-to-be Rebecca Sheen to drive her to her wedding in Find- on, West Sussex. The Daily Mail reports that Mr Abrahams’s family paid an emo- tional tribute to him, describing him as a ‘well-respected and

Limo horror ... the wrecked Daimler

loved father and hus- band’.

They added: “He enjoyed his work chauffeuring his beloved Daimler car and he enjoyed gar-

dening.

“He was proud to have served in the Grenadier Guards and the Parachute Regiment. He served in Cyprus and

Bahrain with the UN.” Mr Abrahams’s dedi- cation to public service continued into his later life when he joined Hampshire Police in his thirties.

As a 60-year-old his bravery was recorded in the local press after he stopped a knife-wielding thief from stealing his car. He wrestled the man to the ground and restrained him for five minutes before police arrived.

Jay Sherwin, the owner of East Sus- sex-based Chariots Chauffeurs, paid trib- ute to Mr Abrahams as “one of the most likeable people you could ever meet”. He said: “My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Maurice’s family at this tragic time. Mau- rice was one of the most likeable people you could ever meet. He had an easy-

going manner and was always the joker. “Over the last 20 years that I have had the privilege of know- ing Maurice we became good friends and with all of his help and input he was an integral part of the company.

“He was not just a colleague but a friend too and he will be sorely missed.”
