THE BERNIE THE BOOK COLUMN
KIWIS TO DETHRONE AUSSIES - THE HUNT IS ON IN SPOTY
Firstly, an update. I hope my readers availed themselves of my two headline tips last issue, as both won. DARYZ won the Arc in the style of a very good horse (9/4) and last week, MILWAUKEE claimed the baseball World Series at 7/1 advised pre play-offs.
That’s a 25/1 double and more than the abolition of standing charges on gas, Mr Healey!
And so to November’s action...
THE RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP Although in its early group stages with the semis taking place around Bonfire night, one thing is abundantly clear, it’s going to be a Southern Hemisphere lockout, freezing out England and, as the opening fixture demonstrated, the undisputed kings of the game, Australia, are not going to have it all their own way and at 3/1, NEW ZEALAND just have to be backed in what is likely to be a very close tussle.
Nearer home, our domestic season is in full swing:
PREMIER LEAGUE An interesting month to say the least, what with the Premier League finding Man City guilty of being too good and the rest of their opponents guilty of whinging (you can see where my loyalties lie!), but nevertheless this presents huge opportunities to win some dosh, dependent on your viewpoint. Let me enlighten you…
IF YOU BELIEVE that the Premier League will impose, AND ENFORCE, say a 100 point deduction (that has been mooted), then back Man City to be relegated at 10/11 with a number of firms, a no-brainer.
IF YOU BELIEVE Man City will prove their innocence or at the very least be fined and have no points deduction, then the 4/1 currently available to win the Premier League represents huge value where their true odds would be somewhere nearer Evens.
PHTM NOVEMBER 2026
But there are other opportunities in the Premier League relegation market, especially when you factor in that there might only be two or three ‘other places’ available (dependant on Man City occupying one of the three places).
AND, having watched Spurs last Monday against a really poor Coventry City, I think the 14/1 on ‘too good to go down’ TOTTENHAM is a whopping price that needs to be taken now! Simply put, they are a poor outfit who will continue to hover near the drop zone.
SPOTY
AND FINALLY… Awards season is just around the corner, starting with SPOTY, and in a year where our sportsmen and women have hardly excelled in the traditional individual pursuits of football (dire), motorsports, cricket, golf et al, there is only one logical choice - AMY HUNT who came of age in the European Championships in the summer with four gold medals.
At a shade of odds on, 10/11, you might argue that this is hardly value. I counter that with not only the above reasoning, but she will also get a huge sympathy vote (though she would not want it or need it) due to the fact that she is the daughter of BBC commentator John Hunt, who tragically lost his wife and two other daughters to a cross bow killing last year by one of the daughter’s boyfriends. So, in this instance, it is huge value. Just imagine the massive coverage the unbiased! BBC will give to this human interest story prior to ‘the phone lines are now open’.
Spare a deep sea diver (£5) for SAFFIE OSBORNE , who at 66/1 is a huge price for the first female jockey to win a British classic, the St Leger back in September. Some layers will do forecasts, so bear this in mind or back Saffie each way, which should pay 10/1 a place.
Until next time Good punting
