PASSENGER THREATENED TO CUT PH DRIVER’S THROAT AND ROBBED HIM IN BRADFORD

A 72-year-old private hire driver was threatened with having his throat slit and was robbed of £300 and his mobile phone during a fare in Bradford. Nikolas Balog, 31, targeted the driver after getting into the vehicle with two other men last August. After the other passengers were dropped off, Balog asked to go to another area.

When the driver stopped and asked for payment,

Balog then demanded money. Prosecutor Thomas Theakston told Bradford Crown Court that the defendant shouted: “Give me your

money or you’re done” and threatened to “cut his throat”. Defending Balog, Nick Cartmell said he pleaded guilty on the day of the trial, describing it as a “foolhardy and stupid act when he lost his temper”. Recorder Hill-Baker sentenced Balog to 46 months in prison for the robbery.

100 MONTHS’ JAIL FOR BRADFORD ROBBER WHO HELD AXE TO CABBIE’S FACE

A 24-year-old robber who terrorised shop workers and a cabbie has been jailed at Bradford Crown Court. Ismael Ahmed 24 was sentenced to eight years and four months in jail after a two-day robbery spree. He targeted petrol stations and shops across Bradford in May,

stealing cash and

cigarettes and threatening staff with violence.

His offending cul- minated in an attempted rob- bery at a Co-op, when he returned to a waiting cab, became aggressive and held an axe to the driver’s face, telling him: “I’m going to murder you, ”while demanding he drive faster.

The driver managed to escape after stopping the vehicle and taking the keys with him. Ahmed later admitted 10 offences, including 2 robberies, 5 attempted robberies and weapons offences. A judge at Bradford Crown Court said Ahmed represented a danger to the public and imposed an extended sentence, including three years on licence.

COVENTRY CABBIE DISFIGURED AFTER FORMER SOLDIER BITES HIS EAR IN ROAD RAGE ATTACK

A Coventry cabbie has been left disfigured after a man bit his ear during a violent late-night road rage confrontation. Shane Hurley, 41, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mohammed Hanan in an attack so severe the victim required stitches. The incident happened at 1am on 23 December 2022 as Mr Hanan was driving home following his taxi shift. The two men met on a narrow road lined with parked vehicles that lacked space for both cars to pass. Hurley began

46

shouting at Mr Hanan to reverse his taxi, triggering a five-minute argument between the drivers. The row rapidly escalated when Hurley got out of his vehicle and confronted the cabbie. He leaned inside the cab and struck Mr Hanan before climbing into the vehicle to bite him on the ear. Mr Hanan required multiple stitches, but the wound became infected and left his ear perm- anently disfigured. The assault also forced Mr Hanan off work during

December and January, resulting in c. £3,000 in lost earnings. At Warwick Crown Court, Judge Kristina Montgomery condemned the assault as “wholly unaccept- able.” The court heard in mitigation that Hurley had previously served in the British Army and had been diagnosed with PTSD. Hurley was sentenced to a 20- month suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay £3,000 in compensation to Mr Hanan to cover his financial losses.
