GLASGOW HACKNEY DRIVER SITTING ON RANK HOURS AFTER BEING SUSPENDED

A Glasgow taxi driver who returned to work just hours after being suspended has been handed a further four-week suspension. Mohammad Sarwar came to the attention of enforcement officers following an allegation that he refused to take passengers to

Milton in the early hours of 9 May. An inspection of his taxi revealed a meter clock running six minutes fast and missing documentation. Officers suspended his licence, but later that same day, at 9.35pm, they spotted him at the Hydro taxi rank attempting a pick-up.

When challenged, Sarwar said he believed it was acceptable to continue working and admitted carrying out two or three hires. The licensing committee heard that he had arranged for the meter to be corrected. Sarwar apologised, say- ing he’d misunderstood the situation.

NEWCASTLE TAXI DRIVER FINED FOR ILLEGALLY PICKING UP FARES IN STOKE

A Newcastle-under-Lyme licensed taxi driver has been prosecuted and fined after illegally picking up passengers outside his permitted district. Dilshad Ahmed, from Longton, committed the offence on 26 December 2025 at a temporary match day taxi pick-up point at Trentham Lakes.

By taking a fare from a taxi rank in Stoke-on-Trent, he was unlawfully plying for hire outside his district, an action that automatically invalidated his vehicle insurance. He also failed to use his taxi meter for the journey, choosing instead to charge the customer upfront. Mr Ahmed appeared before

magistrates at North Staffordshire Justice Centre, where he pleaded guilty to the licensing breach. The court originally fined him £325 and ordered him to pay £851.92 in costs to Stoke-on-Trent City Council, with the fine sub- sequently reduced to £250 in recognition of his guilty plea.

noticed the vehicle was missing its required roof light and recognised Manir, knowing he had not held a HC driver licence for several years. They followed the vehicle until it stopped and established Manir was not the owner. Manir appeared at Burnley Magistrates’ Court in September, where he pleaded not guilty to both offences, telling the court he had been test-driving the vehicle to a garage in Haslingden and believed his vehicle traders’ insurance policy covered him. Despite his defence, he was convicted of driving without proper driver licence and insurance.
