THE BERNIE THE BOOK COLUMN TIME FOR THE PRANCING HORSE TO SHOW HER SPEED

Spring is in the air and with it the start of various competitions, or at the very least competitions in their infancy. Regular readers of this column will know my love of Cheltenham, for my tips see February’s column. But one final thought/tip is on the correct score between Irish and English trained winners, commonly known as The Prestbury Cup, contested over the four days and 28 races.

My belief this year is that the English will rally and the juggernaut scores of recent years in favour of the Irish won’t be repeated. Sure, they will still trounce us but not by so much and I can see the score being 19-11 (6/1) or 18-10 (8/1). For occasional punters, this will keep your interest alive.

FORMULA 1

As alluded to, away from the Cotswolds, the new season of F1 has just started. Opposing Max and Red Bull is a quick way to the bankruptcy courts, after all Max alone won a staggering 19 of 22 races in 2023 and Red Bull 21!! Nevertheless there is a nagging doubt in my mind for 2024. After all, who knows how the off season and off track disciplinary hearings against Christian Horner will play out, even after this week’s vindication? And this will no doubt have some effect, after all there is no smoke without…

Added to the fact that Lewis Hamilton will be racing for Ferrari in 2025 (he wouldn’t be leaving if he didn’t think Ferrari have a winning car) leads me to believe that CHARLES LECLERC (current number 1 at the prancing horse) will be driving a very competitive car. Preseason testing bears this out and in the Drivers’ Championship market, ex-Max he is 11/4 to win. Take that price now. I would not steer anyone away from my original pick of Lando Norris at 7/1 for small stakes.

On a similar vein, FERRARI to win the Constructors’ Championship (ex Red Bull) at 11/8 must be taken for those who can wait till November for the bet to be settled.

SUPER LEAGUE

Just started, Rugby League’s premier competition is back with all the usual suspects stronger than ever. Wigan have improved and recently become World

PHTM MARCH 2024 WORLD SNOOKER

Back to Sheffield and who can stop Ronnie O’Sullivan winning an unprecedented Grand Slam of the big three snooker events? Well frankly, no one but HIMSELF!

Clearly the greatest of all time, Rocket Ronnie will win if in the right frame of mind, but his constant battles with his own mind surely make him a lay at 5/2. It’s not that you are not prepared to lose your own money, it’s the apparent non caring projection he portrays in interviews. It is irksome and not for me.

There are plenty of challengers, notably Trump and Allen, but the prices are just too short. Exchange punters should not be deterred from backing them outright IF they are losing heavily in a match as both are pressure players but my three against the field at big odds are:

• ALI CARTER 28/1 • GARY WILSON 50/1 • ZHANG ANDA 33/1

FA CUP

And so to the FA Cup, where after this week’s ties, Man City look unstoppable. However 6/4 is hardly a life changing price and who knows how the semi-final line-up will play out? Man City v Liverpool or Man United?? That being the case, a small investment on Gary O’Neills WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS at a gernerous 25/1 surely can’t be missed. Cappiche??

Until next time, good punting…

Bernie the Book 77

Champions by beating Australia’s Penrith, but looking back to last year, they were pushed very hard by CATALAN DRAGONS and the 9/1 on offer for Grand Final redemption is a tempting one for small stakes.

PREMIER LEAGUE DARTS

A month into the season and the event is taking shape in the eight man field. M V G looks unstoppable and will qualify for Final’s night, but equally impressive so far and with no signs of fatigue is teenage sensation, LUKE LITTLER who is ultra consistant. A shoe -in for the finals, the current 4/1 looks irresistible.
