The work never stops, we are constantly striving for a better, simpler, more understandable and most importantly, safer place for you to work.


Call to action


We are very clear on the importance of local associations and representative bodies, to engage with their local authorities, attend liaison meetings, and to represent drivers within their local regions. This will never stop as it is very much our principle that we are national, so we may not know or appreciate the local issues that are affecting you, such as rank provisions, road closures, bus lanes, cycle paths, local rates which are suitable for your clientele and many other aspects that are very much regional.


Our role is to support and assist, providing case law and evidence where required, as well as detailed responses to consultations if necessary. But our role is also to help develop local communication and dialogue, and then to remain in the background for support and guidance when required.


As such, it has been brought to our attention that there are regions which do not have any local representative groups or associations, and we have been asked if we can reach out to try to develop one.


SPEAK UP – WE CAN’T HEAR YOU!


The St Helens region in particular currently has no such representation, which the council wants and needs. Whilst we try to be supportive, it’s always the case that no one understands YOUR work environ- ment better than YOU do. So some changes may or may not be welcomed, whilst others may be applauded, the simple truth is that if YOU are not involved in the discussions, then how can YOUR voice be heard?


If you need help, support and advice on how to set up a local association, how to get involved, or even a draft constitution, please feel free to reach out to us. We have draft documents you can use, and we can get the ball rolling for you. But it needs to be you, your voice, your opinions, and you need to be representing your colleagues and friends.


PHTM NMARCH 2024 DBS issues


We have already covered the issued of two separate DBS certificates: one for taxi and private hire licences issued by “regulators” (as defined within the Regulators Code 2014), which suggests that ALL activities are indeed “regulated” as we have been saying; and one for “regulated activity” which is local authority school contracts.


Then there’s the DBS update service being set up to fail, since it will only allow debit card renewals which automatically fail every time the card expires. They will not utilise direct debit renewals as all other professional bodies do, such as DVSA, TV Licensing, utility bills, mortgages and any insurance policy.


More recently we have encountered a new issue, the department for taxi and private hire licences accepts the DBS update service, but the education department of the same council refuses to accept the update service!


To add to the confusion, for some odd reason, unknown and as yet unexplained, the service has a five- year DBS renewal period, which does not align with the time frame to submit new DBS certificates, nor does it line up with any taxi or private hire badge renewal, in fact it makes no sense at all.


We have questioned their approach, and await suitable responses.
