DELTA DRIVER FUMING AFTER BEING FINED £100 AT LIVERPOOL JOHN LENNON AIRPORT
A Delta PH driver is furious after being fined £100 while dropping off a passenger at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. John Wallace, 59, from Litherland, received a PCN fining him £100 for ‘stopping to pick up or drop off in a restricted zone’ at the airport. Dated May 16, the PCN shows CCTV images of John’s Volkswagen Passat dropping a customer off at the car park for the car hire area. John believed he was within his rights to do this, but there is a sign on entry to that area saying that taxis are not allowed to use it to drop off passengers. He believes he has been treated
unfairly and does not intend on paying the fine. The Echo understands he has appealed it. John said: “The customer wanted to go to the car hire place at the airport. I drove in, dropped them off, took the fare, got on with my business.
“I then got the fine of £100 but £60 If I pay within 14 days.” John added: “I want to warn people. If you want to get a hire car, you would drive them there and think it would be okay. I wasn’t going to the airport. I was just taking someone to the car hire. “It’s making our job harder. The knock on effect is that we might
have to tell customers we have to drop them off a distance away and they might get shirty with us. “I was only there for five minutes. They paid on card, I unloaded the cases, and got back in.” However, an airport spokesperson said: “Taxis should not be dropping off passengers in the car hire area and signage at the entrance to the car hire area clearly advises all drivers and taxis specifically, not to drop off passengers here. “Drivers who wish to drop off passengers for no charge can of course use our free drop off car park which is in fact immediately adjacent to the car hire area.
DRIVER’S WARNING AFTER BEING CHARGED £561 FOR TWO DROP-OFFS AT NEWCASTLE AIRPORT
A private hire driver was shocked to find he’d been charged more than £500 for two drop offs at Newcastle International Airport. Trevor Storey, 63, was charged £253 instead of £4 when he dropped a customer off on April 14. The machine didn’t issue a receipt and Trevor failed to notice the charge. It wasn’t until he was charged £308 days later and the trans- action was flagged by his bank that he realised there was an issue. Trevor, from Newcastle, contacted the airport who said his exit had been missed on two occasions and resulted in the high fee. Trevor said: “I work for Uber and everything is done by card, I don’t handle any cash. I swiped my card and they don’t give a receipt a lot of the time.

“The first time it was £253, then on April 19 I dropped someone off and Uber gave me another job at the airport so I swiped my card again. “I got a receipt but just assumed it would be for £4. But when I finished I was contacted by my bank and there was a new transaction for £308 and I looked and I did have a charge.” Trevor, who has been a taxi driver for 25 years, said the airport was quick to refund his cash. He added: “They said my exit had been missed on two occasions. The woman was very quick to arrange for the money to be refunded.” But Trevor fears it could be happening to others who are unaware and wants people to know there could be an issue. He said: “I do my banking once a
month so it would have come to light then. But imagine the amount of people this could happen to and they wouldn’t realise. Also the airport won’t get in touch with people to say they have been overcharged.” An airport spokeswoman said errors like this are not specific to their car park but present at all car parks that use ANPR systems She added: “As with all ANPR systems, occasionally a vehicle’s registration plate cannot be read - this is often due to poor weather or number plate inconsistencies. “Should an incorrect payment amount display on the barrier, we advise passengers to use the intercom to contact a member of the car parking team who will be more than happy to assist.”
