The attack happened in the early hours of Boxing Day at Rapid & Chippy’s Pri- vate Hire base in the town centre. LancashireLive reports that an investiga- tion has been launched by police after the 22-year-old was taken to hospital with head injuries. It is believed he was hit with a brick and remains in hospital. Janeed Ahmed, the director of the PH firm has taken the decision for the health and safety of his staff to close the offices on New Year’s Eve between midnight and 8am on January 1. He explained: “In the early hours of Box- ing Day morning one of our operators who works behind the desk was violent- ly assaulted by a group of youths.”

Mr Ahmed explained how the firm is subject to abuse regularly. He said: “This incident has drawn a line for us and we will not be tolerating it any- more.

I am not prepared to put my

staff’s welfare at risk any longer, there- fore, on New Year’s Eve to protect the welfare of our staff and to show a sign

of protest and respect for the young lad who is still in hospital, we are going to close our offices on midnight on New Year’s Eve.” Mr Ahmed added: “We are absolutely devastated. It’s not something we wanted to do. It’s one of our busiest nights, we rely on these busy nights. But money doesn’t go above the wel- fare and health and safety of staff.” A spokesman for Lancashire Constabu- lary said: “We were called shortly before 6am on December 27 to reports of a public order involving approxi- mately 20 people in Darwen. “A 21-year-old man from Blackburn was subsequently arrested on suspicion of affray and has since been released under investigation. “An investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.

ANGLESEY FIRM’S MINIBUSES DESTROYED IN DEVASTATING ARSON ATTACK AT THEIR DEPOT

Police have confirmed that arson was the cause of a devastating blaze at an Anglesey PH depot. December. A couple of tactical fire officers also attended and members of the public were asked to stay away from the area. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the blaze had affected a “convert- ed garage” along with a large minibus and two smaller minibuses. As the fire spread, it also threatened a portacabin-type structure that is used as an office. This suffered a degree of

heat and smoke damage. On Friday morning, the fire service said the cause of the blaze was “undeter- mined” - and that fire and police investigators would be returning to the site to make further checks. Police have since said the blaze was started deliber- ately.

A spokesperson said: “The fire is being treated as arson.” Staff were apparently unaware of the fire until they arrived at the depot for work. A source close to the firm said the loss of three minibuses was “devas- tating” for the business. “Luckily no one was hurt,” they added.
