PARTNERSHIPS
In light of this, we are very supportive of the various councils which are being proactive and supportive in this regard by removing “street knowledge” tests, as well as how to work out what change to give on trips etc. Those school-run only drivers will never actually have any need for those skills (assuming they do not already possess them anyway) - so it makes complete sense.
DOES IT END THERE?
Most definitely not! Our valued board member, Mr Abdul Khayat, and I were recently interviewed by Channel 4 News about Greater Manchester’s Clean Air Zone and how it has been proposed to amend it to a non-charging “Clean Air Plan”, and of course what this means to our members in the region. On the same day, we received notification that Newcastle is also reviewing its Clean Air Zone, with a view to abolishing parts of it. This important battle persists!
We continue to lobby at government level, not only the English government, but Scottish and Welsh governments too,
This is a topic on which we have been lobbying for quite some time now, pointing out that there is an issue with the requirement that an applicant must obtain a medical report from their own General Practitioner, (GP). It can often be frustratingly difficult to book an appointment, reports are often far too expensive, and some GPs are not actually qualified to perform the DVSA Group 2 medical standards examination.
We have therefore been campaigning to local authorities to open up this requirement and allow reports from a professional bodies which are not only specialists in the field but are also much cheaper. We are extremely pleased to say that many local authorities have now made this change and allow this. As a result, it has become apparent that some medical conditions were not reported correctly by GPs for many years.
FUEL CARDS FOR LOWER PRICES PER LITRE ON FUEL
together with our
colleagues and board members nationwide, including JP Duffy and Eddie Grice from the Scottish Private Hire Association (SPHA) and as NPHTA board members for any Scottish Government discussions.
The calls, enquires, concerns and fears that come into us daily are not getting any smaller, or easier, or less confusing. Quite often we find ourselves scratching our heads wondering how or why a council could come to such a decision. But we must add that we also field a lot of calls from members where we have to point out that actually, their understanding was incorrect, they made a mistake, and must now “suck it and see”.
NEW PARTNERSHIPS – GROUP 2 MEDICALS
Within the last two months, the NPHTA has been in touch with D4Drivers, medical test suppliers, and have recently launched a partnership with them. Check the link:

PHTM AUGUST 2023
The NPHTA has also partnered with a fuel card provider since, as we know, every penny counts. After trying various options and finding they were not up to the standard we expect; FuelCard Services has won out. The company seems far more down to earth, approachable and willing to listen than the others. It listens to your needs and your work patterns in order to achieve the most suitable card for you on a case by case basis.
