WE WISH YOU ALL A HAPPY SEXTILIS!

No, we’re not being rude… that used to be the name of the eighth month of the year when it was the sixth month, before it was changed a couple of thousand years or so ago to August, in honour of the Roman emperor Augustus Caesar. (Good job his name wasn’t Schnickelfritz.)

Aw, c’mon… we’re only trying to lighten the mood around here during these upsky-downsky are-we-in-lockdown-or-not times. As we go to press with this latest edition, Leicester’s second lockdown is being lifted; 14-day quarantine conditions for UK residents returning from Spain have been imposed; the self- isolating period for suspected Covid victims in this country has lengthened from seven days to ten days.

Further, with about three hours’ notice, the Government put great swathes of the North West – including Bradford, Black- burn, Burnley and all of Greater Manchester – back into semi(?) lockdown. What does that mean? You’re not allowed to meet with families outside your ‘bubble’ in your house or garden. Evidently this is intended to be enforced… and yet the police have stated they can’t/won’t enforce social distancing restrictions in English pubs and restaurants – which will remain open for business. Work that one out…

Is it any wonder people are confused??!! So – as usual – all we can do here at PHTM is to hopefully allay the confusion surrounding conditions affecting our industry. To that end we’ve run several more Covid-relevant features, including the latest collection of airport charges for drop-offs and – more significantly – pickups at most of the UK’s airports. Extra form- filling or temperature-checking might delay clearance through Customs. Ker-ching. Love the Facebook comment where he says that for the price of an excess charge at John Lennon Airport you can fly to Spain…if you wanted to at this time, that is.

On the positive side, we’ve put together a group of very enter- prising, hard-working women who are proprietors/directors of taxi and private hire businesses, to chat with them about the effects of the pandemic, lockdown and gradual relaxation on their companies and their lives. Girl power personified!

You’ll also find most of our usual departments: Round the Councils, WWTF (which in our offices stands for other things in addition to World Wide Taxi Focus), Know Your Rights, Taxi Law Explained… they’re all there. Even some non-Covid news.

Amongst other things for which the month of August is noted, such as “National Picnic Month”, or “Goat’s Cheese Month”, there is also “Win with Civility Month”. Oh dear… I believe we’ll fail in that category: have a read of our latest attack on the Gov- ernment’s latest announcement about issuing Statutory Standards for local authorities’ governance of taxi and private hire licensing - which we consider to display unbelievably bad timing in light of the status of the industry right now. You will have read it here first; it’s also going out to all the mainstream media, both press and TV. Rest assured: #theforgottenindustry will not be forgotten for much longer - that’s a threat and a promise.

On that very rebellious but positive note, we invite you to have a good read, as always, and whether you’re travelling or staying put – Stay Safe!
