...CORNER BIG DAY OUT FOR MERSEYSIDE CAB KIDS
Nearly 90 children were taken in taxi con- voy on their annual outing
to New
Brighton. Drivers from all over Merseyside decorated their hackneys with balloons and ribbons for the Liverpool Taxi Drivers’ Blind Chil-
dren’s Outing. Pupils of St Vincent’s in West Derby and the Royal School for the Blind in Wavertree were chauffeured to New Brighton. Retired cabbie Dave McCoy, 67, from Old Roan, has been taking part in the event since
1987. He told the Liverpool Echo: “The kids had a great time. They ate at the Floral Pavillion and enjoyed a day at the fairground and bowling alley. We have to thank every- one
for donations.” their

The children with spe- cial needs or from poor backgrounds were treated to a parade along the seafront before lunch at the Cliffs Pavilion.
They then headed to Adventure
Island
before returning to the Cliffs for tea and a disco and were wel- comed by Southend mayor. A brilliant day was had by all and the Commit- tee send sincere thanks to all the driv- ers, helpers
and
sponsors and anyone who helped us in any way.
SIXTIETH YEAR OF EAST LONDON TAXIS FERRYING YOUNGSTERS FOR DAY AT COAST
More than 180 young- sters from across Newham were taken for a day out in Maldon by a group of colour- fully decorated black cabs. The special needs chil- dren were ferried by nearly 100 black taxis for the annual East
London Cabbies Out- ing to Essex. It was the 60th such outing run by the cab- bies committee. The event was started by Charlie Flemwell
1952 with just eight vehicles taking part. The drivers collected the children mostly
in
from Brampton Manor School in East Ham, but also from Eastlea Community School, Hilda Road, Canning Town and JFK school in Stratford. Then, with a police escort, they were car- ried to Mountnessing in Essex where they
collected more chil- dren before heading to Maldon. Here they were given a warm welcome by the local residents, many of whom lined the High Street which was decked out in flags and bunting with a distinct- ly Olympian theme. The children then enjoyed lunch and spent the afternoon on the promenade where they played on a boun- cy castle and enjoyed watching a children’s entertainer. Ken Flemwell, chair- man of
the East
