WREXHAM DRIVER PROSECUTED FOR DRIVING WITHOUT LICENCE

A Wrexham private hire driver was prose- cuted at Wrexham Magistrates’ Court for driving a private hire vehicle on a school run without a licence. He had previously

been licensed as a pri- vate hire driver but it had expired six weeks previously. He had not renewed his licence despite being sent several reminder let- ters by the council.

According to the Wrexham News, the driver, of Coed Y Glyn, Wrexham pleaded guilty to the offence and was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £195.

ROMFORD DRIVER PUNCHED RIVAL THINKING HE WAS AN ILLEGAL TOUT

A black cab driver from Romford punch- ed a rival in the face after accusing him of trying to steal his busi- ness, the Old Bailey heard. Keith Lammin, 51, attacked Asif Iqbal in front of shocked pas- sers-by outside a hotel in London. He was cleared of alle- gations he racially abused Mr Iqbal and broke his finger but

was convicted of a lesser charge of com- mon assault. According to the Rom- ford Recorder, Lam- min, who had been a black cab driver for 35 years, was given a 12- month

The Judge told the cabbie: “I accept you had a genuine belief Mr Iqbal was there unlaw- fully,

discharge after the judge heard this may allow him to keep his job. He was also ordered to pay £500 prosecu- tion costs.

business, and under- stand you being annoyed. “You would have been perfectly capable of reporting him, having obtained details of his registration number and licence plate. That should have been the end of it.”

PETERBOROUGH PHV DRIVER AND OPERATOR FINED FOR ILLEGAL PLYING

A private hire driver and his operator have been caught illegally picking up plain clothed police officers in Peterborough city centre in February. Taxi driver Azur Hus- sain, 31, was caught by the police officers working in a joint oper- ation with Peter- borough City Council’s Licensing Team and Cambridgeshire police. The operation targeted a

takeaway Fitzwilliam in Street

owned by Asghar Ali, who is also the opera- tor of City Cars, a private hire company based in Peterborough. It was suspected that takeaway staff, along with City Cars, were ille- gally pushing private hire services and dis- patching their vehicles to illegally ‘rank’ out-

side the takeaway with- out genuine bookings. At Peterborough Mag- istrates’ Court Hussain pleaded guilty to unlawfully plying for hire and to having no insurance. He was fined £500, ordered to pay £200 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. He was also issued with eight points on his licence for the offence of being unin- sured. According to Peterbor- ough Today, the court heard that Hussain attracted the officer’s attention by waving them over and despite telling him twice that they had not booked the journey, he agreed to take them. During the investiga- tion, officers also discovered that the operator of City Cars,

Asghar Ali, was failing to keep records in accordance with his licence conditions. Ali pleaded guilty to the record

keeping

offence. He was fined £500 and ordered to pay £200 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. A decision will now be made by the city coun- cil’s concerning their licences. Mmmm… This is the closest we’ve heard of a connection between an

illegal plying

offence, and the con- duct of the operator being called into ques- tion as well. If there were more incidents of vicarious liability on the part of the operator, surely the number of illegal plying episodes would reduce… plus introducing a fixed penalty as well.- Ed.
