PH AND TAXI COMPANIES TO RECEIVE RECOGNITION FOR GOING GREEN

The 14th Annual GreenFleet Awards will once again high- light the great work going on in the fleet sector, in terms of car- bon reduction. It will take place at the Emi- rates Stadium, home of Arsenal Football Club, on the 11th October 2012, and will feature a champagne reception, followed by a gala dinner and awards ceremony. More than 350 key people from the indus- try, including motor manufacturers, leas- ing, rental and private hire companies and other industry sectors will be vying with each other in the hope of winning a coveted GreenFleet Award. The categories include Electric Vehicle of the

Year, City and Fleet Car Manufacturers of the Year and LCV and LGV Manufacturers of the Year. Greater London Hire and QDell/LHR Express Cars have recently either won or been run- ner-up in the Private Sector Fleet of the Year category, and it is for this reason we have decided to introduce a new category for 2012. Colin Boyton, Market- ing Manager for the event, said; “Due to the great work being done in the private hire and taxi sector, we have decided to give them their own cate- gory, and the chance to really go for nation- wide recognition for their endeavours. So we are pleased to announce that thanks

to the support of our sponsor, Cordic, 2012 will be the first oppor- tunity

for any

organisation in this sector, that is striving to reduce the environ- mental impact of its fleet, to enter. Simply go to the website, select the category, fill in the form, add a 500 word entry statement which can be support- ed by case studies or other evidence, and that’s it!” Details and the online entry form can be seen at

LONDON COMPANY SWITCHES ON EUROPE’S FIRST FREE WI-FI ENABLED MINICABS

greentomatocars, Lon- don’s second largest quality minicab serv- ice, has become the first passenger car company in Europe to adopt free in-car Wi-Fi across its entire fleet. Passengers travelling in any of greentomato- cars’ 300 hybrid vehicles will be able to access the internet wherever their journey takes them, for free. The capital is already home to more software and IT companies than any other European City. The digital and hi- tech sector is expected to account for a third of the capital’s growth over the next twenty years and greentoma- tocars’ founder, Jonny Goldstone, believes providing seamless digital connectivity for London’s businesses will be the key. “London has long been recognised as a hub for technological innovation. In 2008 it was named the Wi-Fi capital of the world and in 2012 I think it

Jonny Goldsmith, greentomatocars MD

would be fair to say it’s now the free Wi-Fi cap- ital,” said Goldstone. “With free in-car Wi-Fi we are able to offer our customers the access they need to stay connected.” greentomatocars’ free in-car Wi-Fi is available to all customers and can be accessed by connecting to the serv- ice and using the password ilovefreewifi. The entirely free serv- ice is powered by 3G Mobile Broadband via individual networked SIM cards in each car, provided by Wireless Logic, allowing down- load speeds of up to

7.2Mb/sec and upload speeds of up to 2Mb/sec. Goldstone

added,

“greentomatocars was London’s first environ- mentally friendly mini- cab service and now we’re the first to provide free Wi-Fi across our 300-strong fleet. And our timing couldn’t be better. Summer 2012 is well and truly upon us so for all of those peo- ple who happen to find themselves travelling around London when the action is on, they’ll never miss a moment of sport or a medal ceremony in the back of one of our cars.”

SWALE TAXIS ALLOWED TO ADVERTISE THEY ARE GREEN

Taxi firms in Swale are to be allowed to have “low-emission vehicle” signs on the sides of more environmentally- friendly cabs. The proposal, which would be for cars with a carbon dioxide level of 100g/km, the upper limit for being exempt from car tax charges, was to be discussed by Swale Council’s next general licensing committee. Richard Penney, MD of Sittingbourne-based Let’s Go Green Cabs, which uses the hybrid Toyota Prius, said he had been fighting for changes for about four years. “We’ve

eventually

made a little bit of progress,” he told the Kent

“Most of our vehicles are 104g/km, apart from a couple of the newer ones which are 89, so we’ll be dis- cussing the level.” Mr Penney said ideally he would like the coun- cil

to reverse the

borough-wide colour scheme for low emis- sion cabs from white with a green stripe to green with a white stripe. “We’d still like to have bright green cabs so the public can make an informed choice that they want to travel green in a low emis- sion vehicle,” said Mr Penney.

Changing the colour scheme is listed as an “alternative option” in a report for the council’s licensing committee. Another is allowing bon- nets of low emission vehicles to be green. But the report said there had been oppo- sition to changing the colour at a liaison meeting for cab firms. And it warns: “Any change to the consis- tent vehicle livery for all taxis could cause confusion for passen- gers and the change of colour without wording would not necessarily identify to the customer that the taxi was a low emis- sion vehicle.”
